Did you build the whole unit or is it an adapted piece of furniture?

Thank you RubyDG! I wanted something that looked a bit smarter as I am just about getting my bedroom how I want it! I did take some more pics but they are still on the camera, must have a look - I haven't managed to get many of Smokey actually exploring her new space though, mostly just stuffing her face...

Thank you Fluffagrams! I'm not all that amazing at DIY but I do like having a go at things. I made the whole unit from scratch as I was fussy about what size I wanted - I was thinking about buying a cupboard that matched my bedroom furniture and adapting that, but nothing in the range was the right size and it would have cost me too much!

Shannonmcn ha ha yes I did feel bad about the potato! It served me well, and I mashed it...but Smokey got to eat some, she loves a bit of mash.

velma yes the advertising blurb for the qute makes it sound so perfect! Shame because I think it's a nice idea in principle.

Thank you rkarcheologist heh heh yes the potato caused quite a bit of amusement in the family!

This is AMAZING! I can't wait to see what it looks like as it progresses. One day I hope to have the room to build something like this.

Thanks Tazius! I hope you'll have the chance to build something too, it's very satisfying!

Well here's a few pics!

Smokey enjoying her fresh food in her new home...she has a platform by the door so she can queue up at mealtimes!

The right hand side - she loves her rattie tubes! She's currently working on digging a huge pit in her aspen.

Left side - I know her saucer is too small but she loves it, she likes to flop out in it and she won't run on the bigger one I bought her. I'm going to add more to this side but she's done a lot of digging around her cork tunnel and she likes climbing on it.

The door is just the right size to hook her tube into during playtime, so she can come and go as she wishes.

The roof panel - I have got some silver twizzly things to fasten it with, but no idea where I have put them...

Amazing cage, what a lucky hamster! Some great ideas there too. If only the manufacturers of commercial cages could make something as nice as this.

Thank you Wisper! Yes it would be good if manufacturers would make some smart looking cages.

A few more pics of Smokey enjoying her space - this time, the space underneath!

I've got her grassy nest and a leftover bit from her old cage in the middle - oh, and her dinner bell! I want to put more stuff in here for her to play with.

The right side houses a Sputnik, and some of the toys that get spread around the floor.

In the left side, I keep her food boxes and toilet roll stash. There is still room for a little fat hamster to squeeze in and try to steal things.

"YAY I'VE GOT BARS TO CLIMB!!!"

(In case you're wondering, that's just a tufty fluffy bit of fur on her tummy! I was worried when I saw the photo and had to zoom in to check!)

That's just lovely! I do really like that she has a good amount of substrate depth for digging and you've hooked the shelves up so nothing will fall on her when she tunnels. Smokey looks like she's really enjoying the new cage!!
