Default Gnaw block Hanging Treat

Winston doesn't chew on his plain Gnaw blocks, so i decided to make a treat out of it to try and encourage him as i was worried about his teeth.

The blocks are from Nibbles Bark'n'Bites (i think) so here is what you'll need:

- 1 Block
- String (thick)
- Pestle mortar (I improvised on this one! with a rolling pin and metal bowl)
- Bowl of hot water
- Draining spoon
- Hammies favorite treats
- Normal hamster Mix
- Knife

Step 1
Gather the food, i chose Vitakraft Raviolos (one of them) and i picked out certain seeds and things out of Winstons mix that i thought he'd like most. Put these in the hot water for 5 mins or so. Leave a few seeds and nuts on the side to decorate later on.

Step 2
Take your gnaw block and score it, preferably deeply so the food can adhere to it better.

Step 3
Take your string and thread it through the hole, double or triple knot it to make sure it cant pass back through the hole.

Step 4
When 5 minutes has past, take the draining spoon and take the food out of the water. Put the food into the Pestle Mortar and give it a good bashing, almost until it's a thick mush.

Step 5
Take what is in the bowl with your hand or spoon (whatever you prefer) and press it into the gnaw block on all sides. I found this quite tricky but it worked out in the end after fiddling about!

Step 6
It's time to decorate with the seeds and nuts that were left on the side! Just press these into the food what is already on the Gnaw block.

Step 7
Let it dry and hang it up!

Final Result:

I know it's not very attractive! haha. Winston really enjoyed this, although it didn't make him chew the wood very much, which was what i was trying to achieve. I woke up the next day and....

He had eaten it all!

Give it a try! It's pretty simple and your ham will love it!

What a good idea. Even if he hasn't chewed the wood any more than normal , he's had to work a but harder for his treat which is good for them. Really must get a pestle & mortar (it sounds quite therapeutic, bashing food up )

Good work Winnie! Better than buying pet shop treats when you can improvise and do some mashing, bashing and stick on your own treats! I wouldn`t be without my pestle & mortar. I use it to break up larger biscuits or mash things into a powder to make some seed and nut treats for Chubs.

Check out your local charity shops for one or supermarkets/ebay etc....x

Thank you, probably sounded like a daft question but I hung up a treat with some jute string for my girl the other day - and I didn't realise how hairy it was, she of course chewed through the string and didn't like it! I know if I made her one of these, she wouldn't sit and chew the food off, she would chew through the string and take the whole thing!

Haha! aw, there's metal wire type products you could use too. Like garden wire, there's probably plenty other types

Has anyone made their own one of these? I'd love to see pictures i've found out that yogurt drops work too if you mush it into a paste, then the treats stick to it really easily then too
