Recycled diy hamster toys :)
Im in need of some recycled DIYS. I have already done all of ErinsHamsters little toilet roll tube ones. I'm not bothered what they are made of. Also if you have a few that aren't recycled leave them too please! thanks in advance

Re: Recycled diy hamster toys :)
I've heard about using empty tissue boxes and then you can cut holes into the sides and attach tubes (or you could add a little tissue inside, some hams go crazy for the stuff). Also some people have suggested to me about using plastic bottles and cutting them to turn them into tubes, but make sure you sand down the edges so they're smooth, I haven't tried this yet but it sounds interesting and pretty easy to do if you have something to file the plastic down with.

I did that with bottles when i were planning on using the alaska cage. I were going to half bury it in the substrate. I cut the bottles on angles for the corners and glued a bit of newspaper to join them more securely. My 1yr old is now playing with it will probably put it in the playpen

Thats good with the bottles, but if putting in a hamsters cage, it would need holes in it incase the ham made a nest in it. I dont know what it is about plastic tubes, but hams like to build nests or pee in them or hide their food in them.

Re: Recycled diy hamster toys :)
If you do make one and its just for playtime i wouldnt botger putting air holes in, it just creates loads of sharp edges that will need sanding

Re: Recycled diy hamster toys :)
Oh okay thank you
I've also just made some more toys for my hamsters out of toilet roll tubes (I had like 15 of them just sat in my room), so this could give you a few ideas, I kinda just made them up as I went along
For one of them I put seeds in the middle then folded in the edges so that I had a flat square shape on the top, I used toilet roll to hold the folded bits down (it looks like a present) I figured it would be fun for them to try and open plus they love toilet roll. For another I wrapped a toilet roll tube up in tissue and placed some treats inside, I then closed the sides of the tube with the tissue so that they have to pull off the tissue to get into their treats. I also connected 3 tubes together to form a "H" shape for them to run through. I also still had my P@H cardboard box that I brought them home in, so I cut off the flaps on the sides so that the box was clearly open on two sides, then cut a hole through one of the other sides and attached a tunnel though, so its created a little hideaway home for my hams and it has 3 exits for them. I placed some other toys nearby so that they can also climb on top of the box too. I also filled up some of the boxes and tubes will substrate and tissue, so that its more fun for them to explore
