Default Detolf lid?

Okay, so the bin idea might be scraped due to SO not liking the idea, so I'm looking at a detolf possibly. On it's side, I can use the glass to separate it into two separate sections, one for one hamster, one for another.

Ideally I'd want two separate lids, kinda like this: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_upClIMHtoK...CIMG5543_2.JPG

Has anyone made lids for a detolf cage? Also since I'm planning to put two Syrians in it, I want to darken the glass between them. Any suggestions on what to use so it's darker?

Of course my SO gets veto rights if he doesn't like this idea (it would be rather long, and we'd have to lie it on the ground...) but it looks like our best option so far, and a lot cheaper than buying two tanks (especially as anything above a 20gal long is 100+)

Will darker glass make much of a difference to Syrians since they have poor eyesight anyway and rely on their other senses? If you still wanted to go with darker glass, what about a piece of stained glass? You can buy it in big sheets and could have one cut to fit!

Not 100% sure but it's been recommended just in case.

Could you put a piece of wood between 2 panes of glass to separate them? I'm not sure how the glass 'shelves' fit into the detolf exactly, so whether this would create more work than it's worth (i.e. Having to somehow cut the glass divider if it is too big to fit where there isn't a 'slot' for it).

Another option which may not potentially be as safe (if the hamster could somehow chew it off the glass) is to cover the glass divider with a coloured glass 'sticker' sheet thing. You can get rolls of sticky back plastic stuff which is to cover glass. I've seen them for putting frosted patterns or panels on clear windows. I think you'd have to ensure there were absolutely no air bubbles or flappy edges (which you'd likely try to do anyway so it looked good, ha).

I was thinking coloured sheet might work, I like the glass and wood.

Unfortunately SO vetoed this... sigh.

But we came up with an okay solution for now, I think. I'll let you guys know once I have all the pieces.

I have had the detolf and for space and size its great, but you have to keep the metal thing on either side where the shelves would rest on and that makes it a very big pain to clean out! Also, if you put chinese or dwarf hamsters in you will need to block underneath the glass divider as there is a gap! x
