Default Contact paper?

For those of you that have made cages from shelf extensions/furniture, I keep seeing contact paper suggested to waterproof the wood/particle board. My plan right now is to use clear waterproof contact paper on all sides, and silicone aquarium sealer on the corners/joints.

I suppose I just want to know how well that works? Do hamsters chew through it? Do their little claws tear through it? Does it need to be replaced on a regular basis or should it last a good long time as long as it's properly applied (no air bubbles or curling edges, etc)?

I'm building a cage for a hamster I don't yet have (waiting until I'm done building!) and I suppose I'm just looking for some reassurance that I'm doing it right.
