Minimum door size for syrian?
What do you think is the minimum circular door size in diameter for an average adult male syrian? I picked up a bunch of 1/4" poplar to make houses/platforms/etc but I need to buy a forstner bit to make door holes. For those that don't know a forstner bit is a drill bit for large circles. They're quite expensive though, so I only want to buy one if I can. The holes are only going to be used to get in/out of houses, not as tubes. Would I be able to get away with 2" or should I go bigger? I know hams can squish down pretty small but still want it to be a comfortable for him to get in and out.

Re: Minimum door size for syrian?
One of my syrians (Fudge) is really big and a lot of the shop bought houses etc are too small for him. I'd be interested to know how your project for diy houses/platforms goes as I'm thinking of having a go at making something myself. Photos would be great if possible!

Re: Minimum door size for syrian?
I found a 2.5" holesaw while I was searching the tool box so I made a quick trial house with that and some 1/4" poplar. Its just held together with non toxic white glue. Didn't bother sealing the wood with anything, if he destroys it I'll just make a new one. The hinge on the roof is done with book cloth though next time I will just add some supports to the bottom of the roof instead. Its not a huge home but the ham is still pretty young and until he moves into his bigger cage I don't want to crowd the current one.
As luck would have it, my local hardware store had a boxing day blowout sale on keyhole saws so now I'm set for any size housee. I like forstners better but its hard to argue with 16 holesaws (1/2" to 5") for 6 bucks~

Re: Minimum door size for syrian?
You don't need a workshop or special tools to make little things like this. If you don't mind a square door you don't even need a drill. A cheapo saw/miter box combo can be had for 10-15 bucks and will more then handle 1/4" wood. For wood, just buy pre-finished/ripped. Rough cut is cheaper but you only need a bit for small projects anyway so the price difference isn't horrible. There is about 3 bucks worth of wood in that house. Large elastics can stand in for clamps and then just a bit of hand sanding when dry. I'm in an apartment but I just vacuum the sawdust when I'm done.
Next time I make one I'll take some progress pictures and post measurements/cuts.
