Safe or not safe?

Hey everyone I was wondering if i could use construction paper for home made paper crinkles to give batmans cage a little color. I was wondering if the dye in the paper is ok, or if there is a way i can make it safe like running it in water and drying it. I saw really cute Christmas colored crinkles in the pet stores tanks.
