Wink Sand Bath

I got a large dog bowl to make a sand bath for my hamster Cinderella. I have a little bit of sand, but I need more. What kind should I get?

You need chinchilla sand (not dust) some people do use childrens play sand but that needs to be baked in the oven to sterilise it & dry it out, chinchilla sand is a lot easier!
Where are you based? In the UK the tiny friends farm brand is the best.

You don't want anything added to sand, whether it be dyes or calcium added.I'd not have a sand bath until a truly safe sand can be sourced,it's much better to go without for a little while than play guessing games with safety

Chinchilla sand is the only safe one I think. There are big debates in various places over the different contents of different kinds of sand and some people say no sand is safe!

However many people on here have used this one for a long time with no issues. I find it doesn't work out expensive if you get 2 or 3 at once and only pay one lot of postage each time. With a sandbath also, you don't need to replace the whole lot each time, but can scoop out any wet areas and just replace that bit. Or scoop out any poops if they get too many.

I just use it in a litter tray for our Syrian and one lasts a good few months. If it's for a dwarf hammy you'll need an actual sand bath but they may use it as a toilet as well.

If you can't get hold of a chinchilla sand then a children's play sand will work. You'll just need to make sure that it's not coloured and is actually sold as a play sand (and not a builders sand or anything) as the grains in play sand have usually been washed and rounded to minimise irritation.
