Nice one!
You know, weirdly, one of my niece's friends had a hamster in a cardboard box - that was her cage - and the little thing never chewed anywhere. Again, weird!

My friend had her old guinea pigs in a huge cardboard box too, they never chewed it. but personally I'd never chance it.

On the second from last pic you can see that it just looks like a cardboard shoe box. I may be wrong but that's what it looks like?

Its a carboard box and i added plastic on the inside.

that cage alone would def be way too small for a syrian so it's nice you've added in the expansion and your hammie seems to really like it! and not all hammies will chew cardboard. i know mr nibbles (my boy syrian) wont, but my female syrian taffy would in a matter of seconds  i think it just depends on the ham!
