I was really amazed at how life-like he was. I`ve given her a task now to sculpt a wee robo!!!

zany, what you COULD do, it make a few models of various hamsters/mice in your spare time, not actually taking customer `commissions` as you say, so as not to make one to scale and the purchaser not like it. Making a few and posting them individually for sale to anyone who wants to buy it just for what it is, an ornament of a hamster, is the best way to start. A few members on here for example may like what they see and say yes, can I have that one please? You post a few detailed images, sizing and a one off price including p&p. That seems to me to be the best way to put your toe in the water without actually worrying about tax or setting up as a business. Your a hobbyist. x

I'm glad you liked little Chubs' sculpture, RH And a robo is something on my list of things to do as well :P

I suppose I could try to do things that way RH It would give me a chance to keep practicing making little hamsters and other rodents without worrying about taxes and things. I had looked into it and was really put off by the whole thing - apparently HMRC views anything that you make and then sell as being a business, but some one who sells more things (e.g. clearing out the house) and does so for an extended period - but with a "One off" excuse (Such as downsizing) can get away with not registering as a business I got totally lost trying to read up on it, and ended up deciding against it because I knew I wouldn't make enough to be able to sell and make money on anyway!!

Yes, HMRC seem to be `contacting` people who sell on ebay asking them about how much money they make. Read this on a well known community forum not that long ago. Rediculous that people can`t now make a little money from their hobby without being harassed. They will be walking around car boot sales next.

But yes, making and selling a few every now and then to people who want one is not running a business. x

Edited later in the day!: Something else I thought of was fridge magnets? These would take the silhouette body shape of the hamster (laid flat) and then built up in layers to make the body features? If you know what I mean, a bit like looking at 3D? All flat on the surface and a magnet on the back using a strong appoxy glue. A bit like making a 3D card that starts off flat and then to build the layers on top to make the chest shape, the face etc... then even adding the hamsters name below? x

I do quite a lot if crafting & in the past when I was doing quite a bit of jewellery making I did a few craft fairs. It was a great way for me to have an excuse to try making some bits that I liked but personally wouldn't wear as not my own style & have a way to make some of the cost of materials back. Never going to be a living for me but nice way to pay for your hobby. Plus really special feeling when someone wants to buy your stuff (especially when it's a stranger & not a family member). I've recently been asked to needle felt another bear by the mother of the friend I made the first one for. I don't know her mother & she asked if i could make one for her that she could buy. I won't charge her but i was proper made up that someone liked them enough to buy one

I know exactly what you mean RH I haven't tried anything at all in a relief style but I suppose it's something I could mess around with and see how it goes

That must have been a fantastic feeling, Velma I do a lot of crafting as well, but I seem to have less and less time to do it. Maybe if I find more time that's the sort of thing that I could do

What`s great about these figures are their life-like sizes. They are to scale, so are more `real` looking. I know what you mean about consistency without having a mould! It`s possible that making the clay the same size before starting and keeping each batch in a separate bag? That way you have all the batches separated and know the model won`t be smaller or larger than your previous one.

Robos have such expressive faces and rounder bodies, so should be easier! Did I say easier?..... !!!

Even doing that I don't seem to manage to get them looking quite the same I think I am needing to weigh out and take measurements of each component (head, cheeks, eyebrows, paws etc) in order to try and do that and I'm still not sure I would manage it!!

I'm hoping to be trying a robo in the next few weeks, I'm just needing more clay and a clear head in order to try anything, but I will let you know how it goes when I have a chance to try it

Using stock images can help too with body shape. I love the expression robos have with that stare that sais, " angry bird" or `sweetie pie"!!! I have to say using the fimo clay was something I enjoyed when I had a go with it. I only managed to make a small pink pig keyring at the time (still have it) but wanted to do a small comical pony and a few other animals but never got round to it. My attention span seems to have other ideas and it`s difficult to focus on one project. It`s one of those pastimes that`s really enjoyable if you can just do that and focus all your time on it, drink tea and listen to the radio! x
