Now, those just knocked my socks off! I have a good friend who loves making ceramics. She did the entire Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs years ago. They are still in her china cabinet all these decades later.

What you've done is even harder, since you did all the work on the fur with the dental tool. My friend just had to do the molds and then paint and fire them. You have done really good work.

Thank you I tried making things from moulds years ago, I always failed miserably :P So if your friend has been able to get them to come out properly then she's done a fab job

Thank you!! I think people charge more the more experience they have as well. There is some one that I follow on facebook who makes lifesized models of people's pet rats. She charges around £150 to £300 I think depending on the size, but they are absolutely worth it if you have the money!! If I do decide to make and sell mine I will let you know though Otherwise we could work something else out - like you buy a block of the clay I use and I make a ham to send to you with it

Errr...I think it works out as about £25 worth of materials for those three hamsters, but that's not counting how much my time is supposed to be worth. It cost me £50 to buy all the things I needed for it but only some of it was used on these (e.g. paints, cabochons which I bought in bulk, brushes. It's polymer clay that I used for these - if it's something you are going to try for yourself I recommed starting with something like fimo soft Fimo professional is really hard, sculpey III is way too soft unless you mix it with another type and sculpey Premo is even harder!! It takes a lot of getting used to but it is worth persevering with I will get you a photo of one of the very first models I made tomorrow :P It will really make you laugh (be kind though!! I was only 5 when I made it :P ) i don't use it a lot but I have practiced for a few years on and off I'd love to see some of your makes though

As for the person I was telling you about, this is her website. Her things are amazing, her sculptures look so life like : Sculptures - Philosophyfox Crafts

The other ones are very, very firm and if you haven't used it before it can be hard to judge when you have it to the right consistency to be able to mould it - if you don't soften it enough first it can start breaking apart when you are shaping it, and if you soften it too much it can pick up impressions from everything you put near it. Fimo soft is a good starting clay as it doesn't normally need to be kneaded much to make it useable and comes in a huge, huge range of colours Every range has it's own benefits and colours though, so once you try them you just find the one that works best for you I like using fimo soft and accents (they are the fancy versions that come in pearlescent, metallic or translucent colours) and super sculpey (which is what I used for the hamsters I made.) Super sculpey and the similar ones are often used by doll makers

Nearly missed this thread! zany made me one of Chubs my Russian dwarf and it`s SO like him! He even has the ruby cabochon eyes! He`s sitting on my desk here with some paperwork underneath. When I opened the gift from the box, I actually thought it had been bought from someone who made them as a business and then zany told me she had made him herself! I was really amazed at how life-like he was. I`ve given her a task now to sculpt a wee robo!!!

zany, what you COULD do, it make a few models of various hamsters/mice in your spare time, not actually taking customer `commissions` as you say, so as not to make one to scale and the purchaser not like it. Making a few and posting them individually for sale to anyone who wants to buy it just for what it is, an ornament of a hamster, is the best way to start. A few members on here for example may like what they see and say yes, can I have that one please? You post a few detailed images, sizing and a one off price including p&p. That seems to me to be the best way to put your toe in the water without actually worrying about tax or setting up as a business. Your a hobbyist. x
