The pet store I bought her at had been there for 2 mo before I bought her. She came in at 2 mo old so obviously she is now 4 months approximately. The staff tried to sell her but everybody said that she looks like a mouse and didn't want her. The manager said that they think that their store is the only store selling them around here. I don't know if they will carry them again or not? The vendor for the other locations of their pet store chain had said that the vendor is no longer breeding them. I'll have to call the store I bought her from and ask if they are still going to order Chinese hammys out of curiosity.

The silent spinner I have in her cage is not silent when she was running on it in the middle of the night. So I'm going to have to do something soon about getting a better wheel in her cage. The Silent Spinners are pricey and not made well at all IMO.

Melody is scared of the light, I tuned the kitchen light on instead of scaring her to death by me going to her cage in the dark, now I wish that I had turned on a lamp instead but I was half asleep. So I never got to see her last night. We've got plenty of time to get to know each other. I haven't let her approach my hand for treats as I know she'd be too scared. She's so little still, really cute. I put that tube in there knowing that she might hide in it. But that's okay, Izzy loved to burrow and she loved her tubes so I figure that Melody might like them as well.

Edit: called the store where I bought Melody & she said that the manufacturer doesn't have them available right now, if ever. I might have bought the last Chinese in Buffalo, very possible. I stay on top of who gets what from the various pet stores, Pet-Co male store sells alot of diabetic hamsters & Pet Supplies Plus also sells health compromised hamsters, like ring worm & mites. I have a couple stores or rescues as options in the future. Pet-Smart sold me 2 very sick hamsters. I got Sylvester from Pet Smart & he got so bad that I had him PTS.

Update: Making progress in taming Melody. He first night after the week was up, we made eye contact and I talked to her a little. The next night I put lots of treats around. Last night I was able to put my hand in her tank with treats on it. She slowly approached me out of curiosity. She got about an inch near my fingers and then ran away. So that's as far as I got so far.

Actually it is progress even though she only came so close. She didn't know there were treats in my hand. But just cause she's curious means I'll be able to tame her with time. I think she'll lose that fear eventually, I'm not in any rush. Just want to let things happen naturally. Thankfully she gets up around 9:00pm so I have a chance to work with her

Melody decided to wake up early & run on the wheel with lights on. She stayed up till I went to sleep a couple hours later. I put my hand in her tank with seeds & she was not ready to interact & kept on running. Then she sat in the corner where I have to walk past all the time as she's on a desk near the kitchen. I just ignored her & let her get used to me walking around. She came up to smell me but then ran back to her wheel. I'm so happy that she has overcome her fears & feels safe enough to come out.

I've had her a couple weeks or so

Lovely to hear she's making so much progress, it really is heartwarming to watch them now vs when they first came home. Let us know how it continues

The pet store said she's really friendly, I'm happy to see what happens, looks like she's not a sleeper which is really exciting

I'm glad that her awake schedule allows you to have the extra time to bond with her. That is always wonderful when they come out to play when your are still awake to do it, too.

Update: Melody took her first seed from my hand tonight. I had to lift her house earlier to see if she is peeing there. I think she is but the Carefresh is absorbing the urine & it doesn't smell hardly at all & she's been in that nest for 2 weeks. I don't know what to do with Dakota & Melody peeing in their nests? I'm not very concerned about Melody.

Just wanted to share our progress. She took the seed even though I lifted her house. I put some seed mix in her dish & didn't chase after her so I suppose she trusts me now.
