Thanks CMB, Cypher & AprilPearl, I just saw your posts
She's pretty much still getting used to her environment. I put a cardboard tube in her tank yesterday, otherwise I'm just feeding & watering for few more days.

Awww hope she settles in quickly . Out of curiosity- how are Mylie and Kylie? I haven't heard about them on the forum in a while.

Chesca, I let my sister-in-law, have them. I had 9 hamsters at the time & she was looking for pets for my nephew. He's 11 yrs old now and loves Miley & Kylie. They kept the same names & I get to visit them often.

So now my nephew has a turtle & 2 Chinesey hammys

I still had Izzy tho & she passed a couple months ago & because they are so hard to find, I bought Melody.

Congrats on Melody!

Chineseys are becoming more difficult to find. Near me, there's an influx of them actually! Hopefully they don't disappear entirely from the US

Drago, I have no idea why the vendors aren't breeding them anymore?? Maybe there isn't as much of a demand for them? I hope they don't stop completely all over the country?

Well I'm set for the next 2-3 yrs with Melody

My assumption is that it's due to how difficult it is to breed chineseys. It may also have to do with demand- or perhaps even a mix of both! I hope they don't leave the US, but I also hope mills stop breeding them, so it's a conflict of interest unfortunately..

I've had Melody for a week now so according to me, it's time to start interacting. I started talking to her last night as she darted around the cage so vulnerable. She spent alot of time in her cardboard tube, waiting for me to go to sleep. In the past I would have trapped her in the tube & put her in a taming bin

Didn't feel that was the way to go. So I left treats around her cage to find when the lights went out.

Sounds like you're doing everything right so far! Good luck with taming

They're not that easy to find in pet shops over here these days either and it's a case of finding one at a show or going through a breeder although I know that there are rodent mills breeding them.

I think that there's probably a number of factors contributing to how difficult they are to find and one is the lack of demand. Pet shops are going to want to stock what sells best rather than trying to appeal to a more specialist market and we all know that more people prefer the idea of a cuddly Syrian, often available in a greater variety of colours than a shy little mouse-like creature which is really only available in two colours.

I feel also that there is a lack of understanding about Chinese and I feel that the assumptions that they are shy, skittish and hard to tame don't do the reputation of the species a lot of good. We know that assumptions aren't always correct and I've had some Chinese who have been far cuddlier than any of the Syrians I've had.

They're not an easy species to breed and I've heard several people in the hamster clubs saying that they are the hardest species to breed although the way I look at it is that every species will present their own challenges when it comes to breeding.

Cinnamon Bear, congrats on getting your lovely Melody. You are so lucky to have found her! I hope that the two of you have many precious years together. I love her already, and I look forward to getting to know her better and seeing tons of pics whenever possible (of course)!

Fluffagrams, thanks for the insight. I think that Chneseys are so adorable and full of such amazing personality and character. It is a shame that there are people who are ruining their reputation. These little guys are truly deserving of love and appreciation for all of their unique and special characteristics.
