Re: Chinese hamster!
I picked up the 40 gallon last night as I figured it's always good to have another tank hanging around! I think I'll use the 40 in that case and just partition it so it's not overwhelming. I suppose the only problem would be the climbing, but I've made a makeshift wooden level before that can go into a tank, and thus I could create another and add that in if that seems like a good idea. I can also modify the lid of the 40 so that it can hold a hammock. Do you think a chinesey would appreciate a Sputnik? I know some Syrians do, but would it be something a Chinese hamster would be interested in? I love the idea of the barred cage, but definitely not it's price! Not that my babies aren't worth it, but everyone's looking to save a bit aren't we. Although I do really love the design of the cage so I don't know, I may end up buying one either way! I liked the suggestion for grape vine, I have some reptile ones so I think I'll sterilize them and then add them into the tank so they can be a climbing toy as well! Thank you all very much for all the help and tips

Re: Chinese hamster!
Sputniks would be ok but preferably lined with something like a piece of hemp mat, they do tend to like a bit of luxury in the form of a fleece hammock though! Both are best stuffed with substrate too.
I know what you mean about prices, lots of things can be so tempting but we all have to be practical & know our limits when it comes to hamster spending, something I'm not too good at lol!

Haha you are so right! It's true that you can never have just one hamster
I'll definitely be making this cage an awesome one! Lots of climbing and stimulating things. I'll also have lots of cozy places for the little one to hide about in! It definitely takes a lot of self control not to buy every toy I see in the store for my hams

Re: Chinese hamster!
Jessie, my smallest Chinese has a Sputnik which at the moment has some substrate and ripped toilet tissue inside and she quite likes it but not as much as her 'special bed' (aka hammock). She'll usually sleep up in her hammock.
Jessie in particular really thrived in a barred cage as I think she liked the extra scope for climbing toys and interaction but my boys seem happier with the additional security that their bin cages offer so it really does depend on the hamster. There's no reason why your Chinese wouldn't be happy in a tank providing that they're not too overwhelmed with space.
