I'm glad to hear things are still going well with them, I really hope they will continue getting along. Be patient with the taming, maybe take it a step or two back and just sit near their cage getting them used to you and your scent. Put your hand into their cage and simply leave it there so they're used to you being in their cage. You may not want to clean out quite yet simply to keep the stress down between them and keep things running smoothly. Patience is key, they'll tame down with time! Keep us updated on how they're doing

If you can it's probably best to just interact with them or check on them when they're out & about in the cage unless you hear noises that could indicate a problem coming from inside the house.
Thanks Cypher, I'm not picking up their houses any more. They are in my bedroom so I also check on them throughout the day.

Thanks Drago, very good suggestions, no rush if I can't tame them that's ok too

Izzy, my older Chinese hammy bit me again last night. She let's me pick her up for cage cleanings about once every six weeks. She just doesn't like my hand in her precious environment.

But the new ones don't bite;Yay!

Mylie & Kylie had their first squabble last night, it lasted 5 seconds. Think that would be normal even for Russians living together. I lifted up their house this morning to check on them and they were sleeping on top of each other.

I'm going to buy another 10 gal today just in case they need separating during the night. I'll give it a little more time thinking it's normal to have a squabble now and then.

Just heard some noise it could be a dominance squabble & normal behavior, store said I can interact with them during the day when they are fully awake and alert by wrestling the bedding. I know this isn't ideal but how would I ever get to know them if they run from me and hide?

I just tried to pick up Kylie for the first time. I had to chase her to get ahold of her, she's not used to this at all. Mylie was fast asleep so I didn't even attempt to wake her.

Kylie is making all kinds of noises right now. I think that I could work with her and get her tamed. Mylie is the crazy one, I could put them in a bin together and get them used to my hand and scent.

Any suggestions? Patience, I know. As long as they don't squabble I'm fine with them living here and together. The species of Chinese is to burrow and hide. I'm still tempted to bring one of them back to the store if they start fighting. Am I a bad person for wanting to do that?

You haven't had them long so take your time & they should begin to stay out when you're around, rustling the bedding & quietly calling them can work, if they don't come out at first leave a treat & walk away, keep doing that & they soon get the idea that the rustling & calling them means something nice.

Dominance squabbling can very quickly lead to fighting so I wouldn't wait too long, I know that's probably not what you want to hear so I'll say no more!

I just tried waking them both up. neither one of them wanted to be handled at all.
I know it's not a good sign that they had their first squabble. Just frustrating not getting to know them. Angel and Izzy hide too. I don't want to let them grow up hiding all the time. I'm kind of regretting that I got them.

Maybe don't try handling just yet then, just put your hand in with some seeds on or offer seeds from your finger tips for now, one little step at a time!

I'll try that, I love my babies. They are getting upgraded to a 15 gal today probably

So they are upgraded now into their 15 gal tank. I put fresh Carefresh on the bottom of the tank then put almost all of their week old Carefresh on top of the new and mixed it all together.

The hammys I put in the pet carrier while cleaning.

They have everything in the same spot as in the 10 gal plus a big tree log for them to climb and burrow under.

Will see tonight how they do, they have more room now, they are still growing no doubt

This is their new habitat 15 gal

I know it's difficult to let them be, that you want to accelerate the taming process, and that you mean no harm for them, but If they were having their first squabbles maybe another change wouldn't be the best action to take for their stress. Now you've already did it, so there's anything you can do about it, but out of respect I think that next time maybe you should try not to be so impulsive. Don't get offended please, I'm just trying to explain the best I could what I think. If they're having problems between them these kind of things can make them worse.

And I think about the same about chasing them to hold them. More over, in my experience, pushing too hard it's completely counterproductive. My ham was skittish and very very independent. After six months he doesn't enjoy very much handling, but the more space I give him the more "affective" he is (he comes out, he plays, he stays around, etc.) Sometimes we have to try to accept them just the way they are, and sometimes the relation can get better that way.

I hope they're getting along in the new tank. If they had another squabble I wouldn't wait to separate them. I would pay more attention of what breeders told you than what the pet store assistants told you, for obvious reasons.

I really wish you the best with them CB!

I sympathise about hiding hamsters. Flower and Fairy do like to hide. I now feed them when I go to bed so that I see them when they come out to forage for their food. They will stay above ground when I talk to them.

I can even open Flower's cage when she is out and about. So what I am saying is patience really does pay off. Your two babies will soon get used to bedding being rustled being food time.

Best of luck. Hope they remain settled in their nice new set up.

Thank you FF, they love their new set-up. Not a peep all night. Think the 10 gal was too small, they couldn't get away from each other. I like this set-up a lot.

I think that theses two will be together for life?

Hamsterita, I know you mean the best but my mind & heart is set up to try to keep them together. Chasing Kylie around was a test to see what would happen? I made a mistake.

I thought I was dying of cancer so I was open to anything involving hamsters. An opportunity for a pair came up with these & it may be a beautiful thing.

I know the breeders have the best intentions too but they don't walk in my steps. If they fight, at least I tried, I have a spare cage right here.

I'm not going to return anybody to the store, as they are both now my responsibility.

I don't think it's right to slam me down at all. It's better not to say anything if it can't be positive imo

Time will tell with this situation. I use a flashlight to check on them during the night. Their water bottle doesn't wake me up anymore but when they made noises a few days ago, I was up immediately.

Let's all be a team instead of judging. I feel I have enough experience to handle this. If not I'll be completely honest as to how they are doing
But God willing. They will their lives happily together & healthy too. I'm open to being wrong, so let's see.

Every member is entitled to an opinion CB just like you are.
Yes breeders has their opinions and this is from experience with the species. They are offering their opinions to protect you from possible disaster and nothing else. Obviously it is up to you as their carer but remember keeping two females together is never natural and using that as an experiment could result in heartbreak. I personally have years of experience and would never do it. It may be beautiful to you but they are not small persons in skins and you need to think of them as hamsters and not people and do what is right for them in my opinion. Never test them.

Good to hear nobody is being returned but remember it was you that suggested this

Nobody is slamming you down CB. They have concerns for both the hamsters and yourself and may express their opinions. Please try and interpret the posts as they are intended.

I do hope they manage to stay together happily and that you enjoy sharing a peaceful and worry free life with them
