Default Rocky makes a strange noise

Either when he is digging around in his bedding or if i am holding him he makes a noise similar to how hamsters sound when they sneeze but he doesnt have a runny nose and i use paper bedding. My syrian used to make that noise when i first got him and still does it from time to time when he is hard at work digging or making his nest . Is it just a thing with young hamsters. I know its normally supposed to mean he is nervous or scared but his body language doesnt say so he will take a treat from me and deosnt run when my hand is in the cage. I just got him on saturday and did slightly interact with him before transfering him into his new cage but he did not seem afraid i actually had to gently get him unclung from my hand to put him in his cage and i interacted with him sunday night as well. Does anyone know what this huffing noise is? It has me nervous to continue his taming. Heeeeelp!

Do you use Carefresh? If so,that can cause respiratory problems. It is an extremely dusty brand overall, and would need airing out before use or preferably switching over to a better brand with much less dust. For example,in the UK your best choice would be Fitch but in the US your best choice is Kaytee Clean and Cozy, but it really depends on where you are in terms of what is best!

It's hard to be sure what it is from the description but two of my current Chinese made a noise somewhere between a sneeze & a clicking noise when I first got them, no idea exactly what it was (sounded a bit like hiccups actually!) the first few times it did worry me but both have grown out of it & showed no other signs of ill health or distress at the time, I have come across the same thing mentioned in posts by other Chinese owners too (can't remember who or when now) so maybe it's just something some but not all of them do!

I use the kaytee granule bedding. And he actually stopped making the noise. He made it For a bit when I took him out yesterday then he stopped and proceeded to climb on me then fall asleep on my lap. Maybe he was just nervous.

I notice my hams will make this noise when digging in corners of my room. I think it is them sniffing or reacting to small particles and due to the shape of the corner, the sound is amplified to our ears. I wouldn't worry about it unless other symptoms appear

my syrian ash used to do it and still does from time to time he definately had a runny nose i took him to the vet they told me he was perfectly healthy but did give me antibiotics to give him. But at the time i was using carefresh. I switched bedding so maybe that's what it was.

when i noticed that ash seemed to be sneezing from it and i noticed how dusy it was so i switched to eco paper bedding and then kaytee granule bedding but i think i might go back to eco for both of them even though it is less absorbant.

Kaytee Clean and Cozy is the best US option from what I've noticed and experienced It is very absorbent, has little to no dust, and is very reasonably priced!Of course, you could combine a crinkly bedding(eco bedding is one,I believe)with Kaytee Clean and Cozy if you wanted, but it is definitely not necessary and would hold just fine for burrowing on its own!
