Thanks Fluffagrams, I wish I could be so sure but I'm really not right now.
Maybe I've been lucky with my girls as they've never really been scared, a bit skittish but always curious & out & about a fair bit giving me plenty of opportunities to get to know them & get them used to me.
I'm worried that I'm seeing a bit of a repeat of what I went through with Zeki in the beginning here, maybe pet shop boys that have never been handled are very different to pet shops girls but other than grabbing a moment in the morning when he comes out for some food I'm not seeing him at all.
I waited quite a while after turning the lights out yesterday evening but it was still a no show, my concern is that he will quickly learn that he can just come out & do what he wants when it's dark & be able to virtually avoid human contact so I think I'm going to have to be a bit more hands on.

A no show again this morning There was a lot of busy noises in his house when I got up but he seems determined not to come out for treats today, after about 4 hours of trying to keep an eye on his cage just in case I've got to do other things now!
I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion I'll never want to start a new ham in a bin cage again, even Tinwë who is the only ham I've really struggled with was hand tame before he went into his shy stage thanks to bars & a nice front door!

Cypher, you're being too hard on yourself, I know that you'll turn this around after all you're the Dwarf Whisperer. I totally understand your frustration at Zylvan avoiding contact but, you've not had him that long and maybe he just needs more time to adjust. Look how Zeki was and now, her character and personality are really shining through. xxx
So good to hear your little Hamily enjoyed chicken on Christmas Day!

I'm wondering if one of the reasons you're seeing less of Zylvan is partially down to the laziness that seems to affect male Chineseys?

I see a lot less of James and Matthew than I do of Jess and Vicky, who always seem to be busy doing something. Both of my boys are tame and enjoy human contact but sometimes I think that if I didn't wake them up I'd hardly see them at all.

Try not to be too hard on yourself over this - you'll get there with him.

Thanks Lizzy & Fluffagrams, I'm sure I will get there eventually with the little guy & I know I'm stressing a bit over it right now, just can't quite decide which way to tackle things, my instinct is to change things now before he gets even more set in his ways & put the bendy bridge in so I can at least get him used to my hand being close to him & offer him treats when he tries to hide for starters!

I'm not sure I can call Zeki lazy as he seems to run in his wheel virtually all night long but I don't see that much of him & he is quite reclusive except in the morning when he begs for treats & can't get enough of me cheeky guy!

That's the problem right there really, if I can't wake him without him getting really scared & he chooses to only come out at night we won't progress & he'll continue to get stressed whenever I need to do anything.

It is still early days so I'm thinking positive now!

Thanks barley, I hope he thinks he's a lucky ham!

Aw he does sound a bit timid. I think you'd prefer him in a cage with a front opening door! I'm sure when he's ready for an upgrade, things will improve.

Sorry that things are not going as well as you would like cypher. I can't offer advice but I am sure you will get there with Zylvan. You have all the patience and care needed to reassure him and I know you will win him over in time. Maybe he is just one of those that need that extra time and perhaps will always be a little more cautious in life.

I'm quoting what you already quoted, Cypher but I wonder if I should be waking Izzy up in the evenings. With her I know she doesn't like it and 9 mo has gone by. We have our feeding times to interact so that's good enough for me. I put in lots of toys and she didn't bite last night when I put my hand in the bin w/o treats,

Who knows if I had followed the vets advice to wake her up and get her used to handling maybe I could handle Izzy by now?

Serendipity I really do wish I'd started him in a barred cage with a nice door but I didn't want to overwhelm him with space & I guess with my plans for a robo I wasn't best set up for him but I can't undo that so I'll just keep working with him & find what's best for him, a downgrade rather than an upgrade is a possibility as a temporary measure at least.

Coco thanks, I think maybe I missed the best opportunity to begin, I do think you can create quite a bond even in the first few days before they have a chance to get too shy but he'll get all the patience & love he needs & I'm sure we'll begin to make progress, I have seen a little (very little!) more of him the last couple of days which is something!

CB I think you do have to be hands on to some extent at least, some hams take more naturally to us than others & those that don't do need encouragement to make any progress but each ham is so different it's not always easy to know how to best proceed & we'll never know how it would have gone with them if we did things differently, it doesn't sound as though you need to wake Izzy though if she's interacting at food time.

I would make those changes that you're wanting to do, so you can start from scratch with him.
I had a lot of problems with Twinkle when I first got her and I had to go back to basics a few times and yes it was so frustrating but I knew I could do it and it did take a few months but we did have that wonderful bond in the end. You can & will do it!
