Lovely to hear that Zylvan is settling in well and that he got to enjoy some Christmas treats. It's good that he feel comfortable enough to take treats through the mesh - so sounds like he is making progress.

He's lucky to have you! I'm sure he will be a lovely little man all tame in just a matter of time

Thanks guys but I'm not to sure about progress now as we've had a bit of a set back.
While he was quite happy mooching about in his cage, sitting in his sand bath or running in his wheel the first few evenings & if I spot him coming out for food in the morning he'll take his treats through the mesh the last few nights he's not been coming out until I turn the lights out except on Christmas day when he came out for his chicken then went back into his house fairly quickly.
So evening before last I opened up his house & coaxed him up through the mass of tissue (it's filled to the top & almost completely buried in typical Chinesey fashion!) to take a treat then left him alone.
Yesterday I did the same thing for a little bit longer & this morning he was still running in his wheel when I got up so I put my hand in the tank & he was really, really nervous, poor little guy.
Before that when I put my hand in the bin he was nervous but would stop to grab a treat before running back to his house or at least sniff my hand but this morning he just froze then sat in his sand bath for ages before very slowly making his way back to his house.
So now I have a bit of a dilemma, either I leave him be in the evenings & hope he starts to come out earlier again which I suspect is doubtful & I can't get into his house for spot cleaning or to get him out for taming without really upsetting him or the other option is to take his house out & maybe put a big bendy bridge in it's place so he can still have a nice nest but I can get to him easier & possibly coax him out more easily.
This is very similar to what happened with Zeki, he was out and about early & happy to come to me the first few evenings then started getting up later & later, I pretty much left him to it & the taming process took much longer than it should have done so I'm inclined to think the bendy bridge idea might be best even if it stresses him short term it may help long term but still a bit undecided….
Any thoughts?

ETA I'm really not sure if this a more of a male chinese type behaviour tbh, he's only my second male & I seem to do fine with the girls so it's possible I guess.
I've been doing the tissue trick since he came home & he's used to me sitting by the cage talking to him so he should be used to both my scent & voice by now.
I've got a taming/play bin ready for him & I think if I can get him out without upsetting him totally he might do better.

Evidently all is not lost, he just got up for breakfast about an hour later than usual but did take a few treats through the mesh as normal before legging it!
I was a bit devious & got half a dog biscuit, rubbed it all over with a crock complete & left it by the mesh.

You know that I'm a newbie, but I would give the bendy bridge a try. If you see him very nervous or stressed you can always put back the house

In my experience, Blacky was very skittish and insecure, and leave him be completely wasn't helping the taming process. In two weeks, luring him out of his nest with treats and trick him with more treats to go to the bed(playpen) when I heard that he was having a snack we made more progress with taming than in 2 months and a half the other way. I was waiting for him to come out at his own pace, but If I hadn't make something I would still be waiting. On december the 2nd he step on my hand and even walk a bit through my arm, and I though that he was having a seizure or something because he always avoided it (Imagine my surprise that I remember perfectly the date haha). Now his confidence has grown and even he's reluctant some times to the hands, he usually crawls over them and uses them as a ladder, and lately even he allows me to hold him for a few seconds.

Obviously I had two advantages, he never refused a treat from my hand, and luring him out of his open nest was easier than luring him out from his house (and he didn't used to use his house)

Thanks Hamsterita, newbie or not your input is still appreciated, even more experienced ham mums need a bit of reassurance now & then!
I may leave him for tonight after this mornings scare & change things tomorrow.
I don't think he's too stressed as he was quite cheeky when he came out for his breakfast treats, creeping over under the ledge then climbing up & pushing his nose through greedily "More, more!"

It must be frustrating, I don't have much experience outside of Izzy and one other female Chinesey that was even less social than Izzy.

I think it's a relationship builder with a hamster that takes time. I see Izzy during feeding time in the evenings. Just now, 9 mo later she is starting to run on the wheel with the lights on.

I never lift her out of her nest except for cleanings once every other month. I don't clean her nest at all. She will put her front paws on my hand to get a treat that I put higher up on my hand, but other than that she will either go back under the bedding fast, or nip me then run under the bedding fast (to stash the food).

I'm not the best advice as I have not had positive experiences in taming Chinese hamsters. When I picked her out she was the less social, her sister was better but I waited too long to decide and her sister was adopted right away.

Hope Zylvan adjusts quickly for you but I wouldn't clean the nest, but I'm not an expert on the species. As you can see that I enjoy Izzy for 5 min a day if that. Sometimes I just leave her completely by herself. But I know that is NOT what you want. Wishing you the best!

Thanks CB, I don't plan on doing any cleaning just yet other than pee, he definitely pees in his wheel that much is obvious lol! but I expect he pees in his house too, I did have a quick look or sniff rather yesterday & it's ok so far but I can't leave that too long, that's one reason I'm thinking of the change so I can check his house without him getting totally stressed out, how active or interactive he wants to be in the long run is up to him really as they are all so different in personality but I do want to reach the point where I can handle him when necessary without him being scared.
Overall he seems quite a placid little man just a bit nervous right now so fingers crossed we can work something out.

That sounds fun to be able to handle them w/o them being scared. I'm sure with your taming methods, that you'll reach that point. You must have a good chance of him being social as he was sniffing you out at the pet store if I remember right?

It sounds to me like he's gone through a curious phase when you first brought him home and now that he's seen what's what, it's just a matter of getting used to it all.

I think it's a phase that all hamsters go through in some way but others seem to be more affected by it than others. Chinese Hamsters are by nature, a sensitive species and even hamsters from breeders seem to have gone through an adjustment phase where they seem more nervy. I was lucky with Jess in that she literally had no fear and never has done (she's always been a strange one) but James and Vicky went through it and even Matthew, who as you know was born here and remained in the same cage that he'd lived in with his brothers had a period of adjusting to his new life.

I think that in time, he will settle down. Just keep up with what you have been doing and he's bound to come around in his own time.
