Hamsterita hams see mostly at the blue end of the spectrum, so they see best in blue light & very little if at all in red light so if you just have red light in a room they can't see anything much at all.
I have a couple of lamps that can change colour so the red setting is very handy for spying on hams to see what they get up to when they think no one is looking
Some people use red led strip lights, I have one but find it quite blinding so never use it any more.

I also use red light to spy on Pumpkin at night - I use red Christmas lights (not flashing).

I've also never heard of red lights to spy on hammys. Good to know that Glad Zylvan seems to love his new cage & that he's getting up earlier for interaction, even if it's just to watch. He must feel more comfortable around you to do that

SKB if you're using christmas lights do you think that a red led strip could work?

Red LED lights are fine Hamsterita, you can get some that are meant for reptiles that are quite good, any red light will do though, even just a red light bulb in a normal lamp (don't direct it into the cage though).
I have a couple of these, not just for the hams lol! I just like a nice bit of mood lighting

That's excellent news about Zylvan though it's a shame he's moved back to his house where you can't spy on him. This red lighting sounds very interesting also I think I'll need to investigate and do some more shopping!

Red LED strip light would be ok to use. But as cypher has mentioned even a red light bulb in a lamp would also work fine too.

I've got red Christmas lights up in the hamster room too.

Although my hams aren't bothered by the normal light, it's nice to watch them just playing without having them stop what they're doing to come and see if any seeds are on offer or something. I can see myself getting more benefit out of them if we ever have pups as I'll be able to tend to the others without the disruption of turning on the normal light.

I'm glad Zylvan's confidence is improving.

Must check out red lights. I tend too keep my lighting low, I hate bright lights and never use the highest wattage in any of my lights or lamps. I use the lamps that you can adjust yourself.
