Default Re: Zylvan, another new man in my life!

I think we went another two steps back then maybe three steps ahead so we're making progress again!

The other evening when I was planning to change his house things didn't go well at all he came out & took a seed from me but when I tried to coax him back out again he wasn't having any of it so I removed the christmas pudding house & rustled the substrate a bit before removing a little bit but he was determined to burrow down & escape from me so not wanting to stress him too much I left him be but couldn't put the ceramic house back really as I wasn't sure exactly where he was & didn't want to squash him so I just put a big bendy bridge over his nest area.
He was so nervous after that I left him a couple of days to settle a bit although I could tell he wasn't happy without a proper house to hide in & finally tried again yesterday evening.
Getting him out was much easier, he's still a bit reluctant but it wasn't too much trouble & I popped him into his carrier for a bit while I changed things over.
He want straight in to have a good look & I did wonder if he'd come out again while I was around but his curiosity got the better of him & he had to come out to explore & was quite fascinated by the corner tunnel I put on top of the house, he was going round & in circles in one end, out the other & back in again
I decided against the granite roof as he is a real burrower & not happy if he can't dig his way out under the house so I hacked another roof a bit to use instead.
He was much less nervous straight away & took a couple of seeds from me before disappearing for a while then coming out to explore some more.

This morning he popped out just as I lifted the lid off the bin to put his food in & much to my surprise didn't just disappear again so I offered him a sunflower seed & he took that quite happily, he began to look around for his food so I got the tub & showed him what I was doing then offered him the tub & he wasn't too sure about that (unlike the others who would just pouch the lot!) but he did have a good look so I chanced offering him some of my extra seed mix & after a moments hesitation he pouched it all & had a good sniff of my hand looking for more, that really is the most confident he's ever been so hopefully we'll keep moving forward now.
I'm undecided yet as to whether or not to try putting a silent runner in place of his silent spinner, I think I have room but it may be one change too many so I'll probably wait a day or two.

I weighed him while he was in his carrier, first time as I kept forgetting before so I have no idea what he was when I got him but I can see he's grown a lot & is 40g already! He might even weigh a bit more after this mornings treat fest

Here's his new layout, I want to add more if I can but for some stuff I will probably need to drill some more holes in his bin so that will have to wait for now, I got him a cork tunnel too (not sure where it will go but I'll hopefully find a way to squeeze it in) but that's in the freezer & will need a really good clean when it comes out!

Good to hear you've taken another step forward with Zylvan It's good to watch them gaining confidence, even a tiny step forward seems like a massive one (that's how I'm feeling with Jaska anyway). Nice that he had a good sniff as well while he hoped for some more seeds lol.

His layout looks nice and cozy. I like the look of the corner tube. A good idea to put it on top of his house, gives him an extra hidey place if he wants to sit on top of his house

I totally agree, every tiny step does seem massive & so rewarding, I just wish I'd had the camera to hand this morning, why is it always at the other end of the room when I need it!

The idea of the house, apart from a nice cosy hideout of course, was to make a little extra level & make more use of what space there is, even when he's nervous he's still a very curious little guy so I think the more I can give him to explore & enjoy the more he'll be out & about although I think his favourite occupation will always be burrowing underground, typical little chinesey!

I'm glad that Zylvan is gaining confidence!

His bin looks amazing. There are a lot of nice things in there. He's a lucky ham

His layout looks amazing. So many things to do and places to go. I was thinking - with it being a bin cage it's harder to have levels and hammocks and so on, like you have in your other cages. Wondering if a hammock hung from the top mesh might make him feel more secure underneath. (Sorry if you already have one and can't see it!). With taming, maybe it would progress better out of the cage? Although you've probably tried that. As you know I used to have to tempt Charlie into a tube and lift him out and he was much less nervy out of the cage than in it for taming. I guess it would need to be in the playpen but I know you have lots of hidey playpen toys

Re cameras - there should be a setting to turn the sound off - I did that on mine after a while (didn't realise I could at first) and it's silent now.

He does look adorable, especially eating his veggies. Being a boy he will have a contrary and independent streak probably!

Thanks
It's not so hard really to have levels & things in a bin cage, I have ledges, shelves & coconuts that just bolt onto bars so I can just drill a hole to fix things like that, it is a bit difficult though as you have to get at everything from above & it's not that big so arranging things so I can get at everything & he can't hide away to well is just a little tricky.
I might well put a hammock in at some point, I would like him to have one but I think anything hanging from the lid might make it a bit scary when I lift the lid off until he's a bit braver.

Out of cage taming was what set us back the most, made him really nervous so I'm sticking to in cage for now, he is very good in his carrier though so I might try having him there for short handling sessions once he's settled a bit more again.

I do have the sound turned off on my camera, it just makes a noise when I switch in on & a bit of a noise when I zoom in & out but much better than with the sound switched on, who needs all those noises anyway?!

What a great description of the recent steps forward. You have such patience cypher, so I am sure your little man will gain in confidence even if it is a bit slow. He has a lovely set up in his bin.

I love zylvan's new lay out. Reading about him and the many trips through the corner tunnel brought a huge smile to my face.
