Default Adopting a Chinese - will he be hard to tame?

So after a lot of research I went into the pet store to look for a winter white. But there in the adoption section was a little Chinese boy - he sat right in the front of his cage cleaning himself for a good fifteen minutes and was very unfazed by everyone peering in. His sign said he's been in there a month and that his last family gave him up. I asked how old he was but they don't know. I think he looks quite young but I've never had a Chinese before and I was wondering if it is likely to be a lot harder to tame him if he is a bit older? I'm guessing he's between 4 and 12 months old. Here is a little video of him in his tiny little cage on his sawdust https://youtu.be/MFkNIo34XQ4
I'm planning on popping back in a few days to handle him and see if he seems skittish at all but he seemed fairly happy - even went to sleep right at the front there!
Thanks!

A lot will vary in how easy he will be to tame including his personality and how well he's been handled previously. The biggest issue you're likely to come across with a Chinese is that they can be a little bit shy but with a bit of patience, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to tame him.

I've managed to tame a pet shop Chinese in a few days but I've also had one that took about 3-4 months as she really was quite nervous. Males tend to be a little bit more easy going than females but do have a tendency to be a little bit lazy.

When you go to visit him again, watch how he reacts to being picked up and held and that should give you a good idea on how trusting he is of people and what you might need to work on with him.

Do let us know how you get on.

What an adorable little man!
I agree that seeing how he responds to handling in the shop will give you a better idea of how he might behave but they can be quite different once you get them home, most Chinese will tame readily with a gentle approach & some patience.
I have a boy who had been in the pet shop a long time but it really didn't make as much difference as I had expected, I also have a female who I found quite unexpectedly in a pet shop & she was hiding in a cardboard tube & no way she was coming out for anyone but she's tamed really well so you never really know!
The boys do tend to be a bit more laid back than the girls though & as Fluffagrams said they can actually be quite lazy, no quite so hyper as the females who can be a bit of a handful but very enjoyable & rewarding pets once you get to know them & their ways.
Look forward to hearing how it goes with this one.

I adopted a 2 yr Chinese hamster just over 6 months ago. She is territorial so she will nip me if I try to interact with her, like introducing my fingers. She knows I'm her food supplier and she knows I'm not going to hurt her so I don't know what the problem is. But I pretty much just leave her alone and I see her at feeding time at night, then she's off to hiding under the bedding.

So some Chinese hamsters are reclusive and take a long time to tame. But mine will never be completely tame. I don't know what happened to her before I got her? Or if she is just a nippy hamster? So I'm providing her with a good home so that's all that matters.
