Default New Chinese Mum

Today we brought home our first Chinese hamster who we have named Yui. We usually have Syrians but fell in love with yui at our local pet shop. We were told he was well handled and seemed perfectly happy to sit in our hands in the shop. So we got home and placed him in his cage with his bedding from his cage in the shop. But he didn’t move from the spot we put him in. He seemed terrified and froze to the spot. So we left the room dark and quiet. 5 hours later I checked on him and he was fast asleep but in the same spot. It’s now been 10 hours and he still hasn’t moved. I was expecting him to explore a little and then build a nest like our past hamsters have. Do I just go to bed and leave him and hopefully he’ll explore and get settled over night?

Hello and welcome to HC!

Everything is still new and if that is where he feels ok then I wouldn't worry. My hammy has only started to explore his cage and make a nest this week (I got him last Thursday).

You could scatter some food around his cage to encourage him to explore but I wouldn't worry too much, he'll soon settle in

Hi and welcome to HC! Congrats for giving Yui a loving home with you. I love his name. I'm glad that he did well with being held at the store. As Amethyst_ice said, everything is still new so he may just need a little extra time to settle in. As long as you notice that he is eating and drinking, he should be fine. Have fun with your little one. I look forward to getting to know him when he is all settled in.

Welcome to HC & congrats on your first Chinesey
I've never had a reaction like this with a Chinese ham but they are all different & respond differently to their new environment & he should settle down & begin to explore soon enough. As Amethyst suggested scattering food & hiding a few treats around the cage will help encourage him.
Chinese love to burrow & dig, probably more than any other species so make sure he has lots of deep substrate, they like to have plenty of places to hideout too so not too much open space in the cage, they are very agile & enjoy having things to climb on.

I've come across similar behaviours before although not quite to that extreme. It may be that he just needs a little time to adjust to his new surroundings and will settle down and start to explore his new home with a bit of encouragement.

What kind of cage is he living in? I've found that some of my shyer Chinese have preferred a more enclosed cage such as a bin cage with a more semi-transparent plastic than a traditional wire cage or a tank.
It's also worth mentioning that I have known them to become terrified in a cage that they're finding to be a little too large as well. My oldest Chinese was always lovely and tame but in a cage too large, he was terrified of every sound and sometimes it looked like even catching glimpse of his own shadow would send him darting for cover but yet he was fine out of his cage. Sometimes these problems can be overcome with the provision of lots of hides, levels and things like hammocks to reduce how exposed they feel but in other cases, as it was with my James, they may require something with a little less space.

He is in a Savic hamster heaven. He has been exploring a little but he is sticking to the edges of the cage and every little sound sends him back to his nest. I saw him drinking earlier which was a huge relief

Hi Yui
He's adorable & very handsome!
I have one of mine in the hamster heaven & it works really well for him (without all the tubes/penthouse/accessories that is!).

I don’t have the tubes or the pent house on either. I do have the two platforms though and he seems to like the shelter they are providing him. He’s just darting from one hiding place to another.
