I thought it was definitely a hopeless case but she does seem to enjoy some interaction

I'd definitely take it as a good sign.
Keep progressing slowly and you'll get there.

Re: Easter Chinese Rescue
Izzy eats food out of my hand but she is still nippy at times. Here is her eating her seed mix tonight. You can kind of see her bones a little, looks like she's more elderly although she runs on her slanted wheel every night and is happy to come out for treats when she hears me calling her.

Re: Easter Chinese Rescue
She looks ok as far as I can see, maybe a bit on the slim side, have you weighed her? They can vary a fair bit but it would be good to know, especially at her age it never hurts to keep an eye on their weight in case they begin to need any extras.
I'm still surprised she's nipping though!

Re: Easter Chinese Rescue
At the vets she was 35 gm, I would disturb her if I dig her out to weigh her. Next cage cleaning I'll weight her though. If she has lost weight it would have to be old age as she gets plenty of food and she is healthy. I hope she hasn't lost any/much weight...

Re: Easter Chinese Rescue
Good to see her enjoying those sticks
I've yet to have a ham that will touch them lol!
35g is a good weight CB, hope she stays that way, if you can monitor her weight fairly regularly it would be a good idea at her age I think, no need to stress about it but every couple of weeks would probably be good.

Re: Easter Chinese Rescue
I just weighed her and she weighs 27 gm...
Is that any sign of bad news?

Not necessarily, it could just be a variation in the scales. I'd keep an eye on her weight for a while, if it keeps dropping then it might be a sign of something else going on. From what I remember of my elderly Chineseys, they did drop a bit of weight as they got older but one of them then went on to live for almost another year.

Re: Easter Chinese Rescue
Ok that's good news! I was wondering about the different scales too. Glad this isn't alarming news. Will keep weighing her weekly. Funny how she doesn't mind being lifted from her nest. No biting, which is good for when I need to get her up for cleanings. But left on her own when she's fully awake she isn't one for cuddles

Re: Easter Chinese Rescue
That's a big drop in weight for such a small ham, I would double check the scales too & don't go by a single weight, try her a few times to see how accurate it is.
It is normal for them to lose a little weight as they age but if you notice a big change or a continued loss of weight then it could be a sign that something is wrong or that she may need some additional soft foods to help her maintain her weight as she ages.
Weight loss alone doesn't tell you much but it can be a sign that you need to look for other things, check teeth, keep an eye on fluid intake, generally more careful & frequent health checks.
