He was feeling a little bit braver yesterday evening and did more exploring of his new home. He wanted to play in his cheese box but I'm using it at the moment to keep his water bottle in. However Lord James was determined not to let that get in his way.

There's something about chinese hamsters and those little cheese box toys as Lady May loves hers too.

He has to investigate every little bit of his new home doesn't he!
They do seem to love those cheese thingies more than the other hams & he appears to be no exception!

He was climbing on it when I got up in the middle of the night to make a hot water bottle. I think this boy might be more of a climber than Meat was so hopefully he'll appreciate his hammock when he moves into a bigger cage in a few weeks.

Currently he's in quite a small tank but he'll progress on to something bigger as he gets a little older.

I just saw this and I have the oddest need to kiss his tiny nose!
What an adorable little beauty!

I'm biased but he's an absolute sweetie.

He's settling in nicely and enjoyed a short playtime yesterday in the box that will become his new cage. He had a sniff around a climbing tower and was rather taken with a strawberry hideyhole that I'd put in for him to retreat to if he felt a bit scared.

After playtime I put it in his cage for him as he liked it so much.

Good to hear he's settling in so well, looking really sweet in his little strawberry house!

He's settling in nicely which is what I was hoping and he's very easy going with handling too. It was a couple of months before May was at the stage where she'd really be happy about me picking her up out of her cage.

It seems to make a real difference to taming if a hamster has been handled well in their early life. Whilst I don't know a great deal about May's background, I wouldn't have said she was handled much before she came to live with me. With the best will in the world, I still think that there are limitations on what a pet shop can do and if a breeder is not interested in handling the young then there will be some very nervous pets in the market.

Lord James was out and about in his tank today when I came home from the doctor so I offered him one of May's favourite seeds. He took it out of my fingers with his paws, looked at it and then started nibbling away. It was so cute.

I'm sure it does make a huge difference having a ham from a really good breeder who handles them from a young age, I expected his Lordship to be way ahead of any pet shop ham as soon as I saw where he came from but no doubt going to the right kind of home is making a big difference too!
I can just imagine how that cute moment must have made you feel, just what you need after a visit to the doc

I don't know about hams, but with puppies and kittens (and foals) there is a window in their development when they first start venturing out of their nest when they are programmed to not be fearful of new things and that is the critical time they need to be socialised to humans. After a couple of weeks the fear kicks back in and you then have a much more difficult time to gain trust.
Love His Lordship in the strawberry xx
