Question Heat & smell

Hi,

I have two Chinese hamsters, when I bought them I asked for two males and was assured that they were males.
I am now 99% sure they must be female (no bulges at the back)
I know hamsters are normally on heat around every 4 days and normally smell.
I have never noticed my Chinese as being on heat or any smells
do Chinese females not smell when in heat is it only Syrians that are noticeable? I have never had females before, my Syrian is a male (big bulge)and so are my robos (or at least I believe so). What signs apart from smell indicate a hamster is in heat, if any?

Thank you.

Not all hamsters are obvious when they're on heat, I've never noticed it in quite a few of our female hams.
I can tell with Fwirl sometimes cause she is a bit smellier than usual. I can tell with Eggbiscuit sometimes because she's more hyperactive and occasionally scents stuff with her tail stuck in the air. I struggled to tell with Scamp and rarely ever recognised when she was on heat.
And I can honestly say that I've yet to realise when one of the dwarf hamster girls is on heat lol, although we had suspicions when we had a group of four hybrid girls cause there was a slight pattern with their behaviour being a bit different every fourth day.

I agree that with dwarfs you can rarely tell which is why it can be tricky mating them if you don't want to be leaving them as a pair or want to know exactly when pups will be due so do supervised matings. I think the smell is only detectable by the male of the species!

Heh, I had the exact same thing - two Chinese bought as males, but it turns out both are female...

My Syrians both have a distinct smell, are noticeably more excitable & will sometimes go into the 'freeze' pose when they're in heat. With Bolt & Blake I've never noticed either of them to have a different smell & their behaviour doesn't seem any different, so maybe Souffle is right - only a male ham could tell!
