Default Any idea what happened?

1 week ago today i was feeding the furries, i go into Primrose's cage and she was on her wheel on her back, i was convinced she was dying. I took her out and she was limp and she wouldn't open her eyes for anything, when she did move she very slowly circled to the right.. she had a porphryn covered nose. It was 8pm at night so I rushed her to the emergency vet.. who told me that it could have been any number of things, but the porphryn was because she was stressed about the condition she was in.

I had to say goodbye to her, the vet said it was very unlikely she'd pull through and as i held her in my hand.. i knew she was going, her breathing got very shallow and her body temperature went cold. She was only 1 year and 7 months old.

I couldn't fathom it, the day before she'd been running round mischieviously and the picture of health. I have those nagged questions.. should i have attempted to keep her in the hospital on fluids and meds? Could she have got better? Does anyone know what could have happened to her?

I'm so gutted, it doesn't feel real.. all happened so quickly.

Circling to the right could indicate that she'd had a stroke as it can cause the brain to lose not only physical control of the left side of the body but within the brain itself can cause something called "hemi-inattention" which just means that what the hamster senses on the left side of the body isn't processed by the brain so she was only aware of things to her right. I'm so sorry you lost her so suddenly

I`m so sorry to hear you lost little Primrose Susie, what a shock for you. Chinese hamsters do seem to be fine one day and very ill the next with no real explanation. My female passed with a blocked bladder because she couldn`t pass water and was passing blood the day before I lost her. I was gutted as you can imagine.

It`s really difficult to find an answer for you except to say that by the way she was found lying in her wheel very weak, it could well have been a stoke or heart failure. Still being alive, but only just with laboured movement and weakness seem to point to this. However I`m only guessing. She may have had an obstruction or something else has caused this. Porphyrin is normally produced as a sign of stress or sometimes respiratory problems. I`ve seen porphyrin staining in rats and gerbils before. Around the eyes and the nostrils. Allergic reactions to shavings can also cause it to be produced.

Really sad little Primrose is no longer with us. Rest in peace wee lass. x

Thankyou for your responses, it's brings some kind of little closure on the whole thing. She was such a special, amazing little lady.

They are Susie. It does come as a shock when they are found like this. Chinese do seem to just take ill quickly, while some will just have short respiratory illness that can be treated with Baytril. They are such sweet little animals. x
