Re: Worried now - please help!
Yes it's really not good, as you say, if you don't know you go with what they as, terrible.
Our last hamster was a Chinese, we just love them as so mouse like, and as you say very timid so takes a while for them to settle and gain trust.
As for Mollie the cat, yes she is kept under close eye when we are around and when we are out or in bed, the doors to the dining room (where bramble is) is closed, so no chance of her getting in there although have seen her eye the cage up quite a few times when we had our other hamster!

I love their `mouse-like` qualities too. If Chinese hamsters had longer tails, they would be mice!

Re: Worried now - please help!
P@H I have been in all sell Chinese hamsters in pair for £17 and they are classed as dwarfs due to their size but they arn't dwarfs, this always gets to me, also I don't think any thing will happen with the sales assistant that sold them she was only doing as instructed and upsold them, Its such a shame that a pet shop like p@h sell these little ones in pairs, what next Syrians in pairs ??.

Re: Worried now - please help!
I agree. I don`t class Chinese hamsters as typical dwarf hamsters. Even though they are classified as such. They are much more mouse-like in shape and character even though they have pouches. It`s probably always going to be the case that anyone buying Chinese from a pet shop will just accept that they are buying a dwarf hamster without looking a bit closer at the animal they are buying. It`s fair to say that if choosing to keep a pair is what you want and know this might mean separation at some point that`s fine. But even people like myself who know all this already, I would still never feel comfortable keeping a pair of either gender together.
Pet shops (especially the large one) need to be made aware of the issues Chinese can have when kept in pairs because all they are doing is pushing people into a situation they might not be aware of and it`s also unfair on the animals as well if they go into a home that doesn`t know this.
This is probably one of the reasons people return to the store to return hamsters this happens to and it`s so unfair on the hamsters.
