I am not saying that all Pets At Home stores are like that. I worked in a couple during new store openings and many of the new staff for these stores were trained. I completed two of the books and worked hard to make sure that not only did I know what was in the book, but also extra information. It is this extra information that can make a difference to the customer. Most of the staff I worked with were the same, but not all.

I am not happy wither with the way pet shops are portrayed either but at the same time, but it does not always give the customers confidence if the staff aren't sure what the care requirements are of the animal.

i have to admit when i noticed that there was a hamser with no wheel nor house to hide in i mentioned it to three store workers. in the end i took the hamster home, i was told that its wheel ws off being cleaned etc and would be back soon. i just chose to not quite eblieve them as a good excuse to get a hamster!

i have yet to see a chinese hamster at my local pets at home, nor have they ever had a winter white in when i go, but always tones of roborovskis

Actually our local P@H ran some excellent workshops on animal care for children during the holidays. You had to attend several, including a store tour and care sessions then the kids got a certificate & various stickers etc. There was no pressure to buy and the staff seemed fairly knowledgeable. They were willing to listen when asked about a child who was allergic to woodshavings..what bedding should she use. I suggested carefresh and she went home with a large bag!!! These were free and this must be the way forward for pet stores with education from knowledgeable staff. They do supply plenty leaflets but once the animal has left the shop there is not a lot can be done. They do have a 7 day warrenty! One friend did buy a ham there and it did get wet tail which was treated in their vet clinic successfully but then again I feel they should look towards getting better quality animals rather than from mass breeders.

My chinese hamster, Gypsy Bean is from P@H (although I didn't actually get her from there, I took her because she was no longer wanted in her previous home), and whenever I go in to get treats etc, they always have a few. They always seem to have LOADS of robos though I'm not sure if that's because robo's are less likely to fight.

I have the same problem with the exercise wheel with my girly hamster - she does seem to enjoy making it smell really bad! She does the exact same thing with her exercise ball only five minutes after being put into it, she's very smelly!!

The one problem I have with Gypsy Bean is that she wees on me a lot, heh. I think all hamsters do? She's really lovely and friendly though, and absolutely loves almonds and being stroked with one finger all the way down her back - she'll quite happily sit on my belly completely still for 5 minutes whilst I rub her back, before having a run around and climbing all over my tshirt
