Default Borneo XL: my thoughts and review

The Borneo XL:

Size and where to get:

I have to admit that I was in heaven when I discovered a cage the size of this. I had a syrian girl inside a Barney, and while she seemed fine with it this at first, she soon let me know she needed more space.
It measures around 119 cm in lenght, with a width of 59 cm and and a height of 57 cm. In inches this would be around: 47 by 23 by 22 inch. The barwidth measures around 0,7 cm or 0,28 inch. It's price was around 85 euro. There's also an Deluxe version, this is the cages with a few items in it. Then its around 150 euro.

Got it from Zoostore.de and I think If you live in Europe Amazon UK also had it in stock.

Pro's:

-Massive! I use mine for syrian hamsters.
-Lots of room to play around with the cage set up.
-small bars---Also usable for mice. Maybe even roborovski's? (never had them, so not sure.)
-I was finally able to fit my 12 inch silent spinner inside Ray's cage.
-Bars can be folded if you want to store the cage.
-It gave my hamsters the space they needed.
- Very large doors, one in the front and one on the top. I always like this in cages.
- The price is quite good in my eyes. Especially considering that some really bad and small cages go between 50 and 80 euro's where I am from.
- Small barwidth, certain bedding like carefresh won't fall out as easily. Nice for adding more burrowing oppurtinities.

Cons:

-I wished the plastic base was a bit deeper.
-It's kind of hard to get even inside Europe, because they don't ship to all countries
-Hammock/climbing toys required, the fall height is pretty high for hamsters.
-Assembling this cage was not fun.
-If you want/like to stack cages, forget it with this one.

In short:

A really lovely cage, although assembling was a bit of a pain. It doesn't come just in the XL version. There's also the M-version and the L-version.
The bar width gives me other options in the near future to keep either Mice of dwarfs or even a Chinese dwarf inside of it.

That's a very good review, It really is massive. I had the similar cage called the Speedy Gonzales the 80 version and it seems Skyline repacked everything to Borneo.

It's true that it's difficult to get even inside Europe, I haven't tried asking Zoostore yet but the default is they didn't ship in Switzerland as well.

I really hope more countries/stores will start to sell these kind of cages. Or that they atleast ship to more countries inside Europe, so many hamsters/owners could benefit from this.

I am considering buying this cage (just need to work out somewhere to put it). My crazy female Syrian is currently in a barney but I feel it’s not big enough for her as she is extremely active and very intelligent.

imawizard it would be a nice upgrade however it’s very tall with a shallow base, so it’s bad for falls and also lacks depth for burrowing. So you’d need to think about how to raise the base all the way round unless the bedding really can’t fall out. You could then get 10-12” of substrate at least all over which is much more than you can get in a barney - that should help with boredom issues as she will be able to burrow properly. You’d probably also need a lot in the way of shelves and platforms to break any potential falls. Maybe you could also think about the large eco habitat, that’s also a good upgrade but it’s more of a tank than a cage and would be safer really.

I have the borneo xxl and found that putting a cardboard box in the base (some of the base) as a digging box helped give my hamster a nice deep area where his house went. I always give them bottomless houses on top of deep substrate so that they can make their own burrows).

I did also use lots of shelves and hammocks as my love!y syrian hamster, Arun, didnt chew fabric.

I agree that the big doors are great and that is is quite tricky to put together as the bars like to keep trying to fold! Once up it is lovely and sturdy.

Cant really see the cage but it was too cute not to post

Set up with hammocks etc

Bless you Arun. Much loved and missed x

I've only learnt that this cage existed from a member on these forums and I am so grateful for it. I've got this cage delivered nearly a week ago, so far, I am really happy with it. My hamster seems to be loving it as well. He has settled in pretty much straight away (last time I changed his cage, it took weeks). So far, I have not heard him chewing the bars at all. His previous cage was of the very similar base size (120 cm x 60 cm), just a much lower height (I think, only 40 cm), and he would chew on the roof of the cage every night (I did experiment with different cage layouts, trying to block off the parts that he chew, etc. Pippin gets some playpen time every night as well).

I love the floor space of this cage and the massive front opening doors. Also, being a barred cage, Borneo XL makes it easier to attach hanging toys, ledges, hammocks and similar for enrichment. Also, it provides better ventilation than tanks or vivariums and must be easier to bear for a hamster during hot summer days (of course there are various ways to cool down any cage).

The cage is a bit too tall for a hamster (I imagine, it would be amazing for mice). There are ways to adapt to the height with shelves, ledges and/or hammocks though. Also, I wasn't able to assemble the foldable top on my own, but with help from my housemate, it was simple and took probably only a couple of minutes (if that). Regarding its availability, I found it on Amazon.co.uk. The price is very reasonable for what you get. The delivery was really fast, and the cage arrived in a secure package (no damage to the cage whatsoever).

Overall, I think it is an amazing cage. And I would recommend it.

I have attached the picture of my current set-up. Since taking this picture, I have added a lava ledge next to one of the sputniks to make it easier for Pippin to climb down. I have also ordered some more hammocks, they should arrive some time this week.

Looking good.

Degus shelves, available from Amazon, are an inexpensive addition and can be used as shelves, steps, places to sit on or under. They can be placed anywhere because they simply screw on to the bars.

Personally, i also prefer wire cages for the same reasons you've mentioned.

That's a really nice cage. Wish I could have gotten one for Hamper, but all my family would get him was Crittertrail cages and those are for dwarves.

Mother of the world's smartest Syrian, Hamper! Well, maybe not the world's smartest but he's the smartest hamster I've ever seen! I'm also the aunt of the deadly vampire Ruby! He's not actually deadly or vampiric but we like to pretend

Crittertrails aren’t suitable for dwarf hamsters either
