Hi everyone I have empty tank syndrome I bought a tank 55 gallon aquarium off Craig’s list for $20 now I want a hamster to put in it . Would a Syrian be happy I really like Syrian male long haired hamsters!! Thanks for your input! Cynthia
In my opinion - no it is not suitable for a Syrian. Too narrow for them at 30cm wide so you wouldn’t be able to set the cage up properly or give them enough room to move about properly. Length does not always make up for width you need a balance. It would be more suited to a dwarf but if I’m completely honest I don’t think the width is great for them either. I found the detolf limiting in width at 39cm for a dwarf and that was a longer cage too. A 75 gallon tank would be much more suitable.
It's roughly 48 x 12 in its standard dimensions, which is pretty narrow especially for a Syrian!
I would be hesitant to even house a dwarf hamster in it as well, but as a transitional smaller cage it could work nicely or even a potential quarantine cage if you ever needed one. Another idea for using it to not completely waste money would be using it as a play cage, mostly for the dwarf species rather than Syrians(but it could be useful during cage cleanings of a significantly larger cage for Syrians).
