Default Acceptable Hamster Cage?

Hi,
Soon to be first time hamster owner!
I've modified a rabbit cage with 1 inch wire spacing by adding 1/4th spaced wire mesh (imgur.com/a/A3W0C). Do I need to line the top of the cage as well? I will be getting a female Syrian.
Any other advice welcome!
Thanks

Yes you will because your hamster might climb to the top of the cage and pull herself up and escape. Good luck with your new hamster

I agree with Biscuit - I have a modified guinea pig cage that I use as a play time area for my hammie, and she climbs right to the top. I have a topping that I normally have laid on top of the cage, but yesterday I left it off, and within two minutes she was up there, trying to fit herself through the bars!!

They're cunning little beggars if they think there's a chance of escaping!

You're going to want to make sure you've plenty of substrate at the bottom of the cage, hams will bar climb and can't seem to get back down so they drop. If the cage is high there's a nasty fall right there.
