Hamster Travel Cage
- I am aware that hamsters don't like travelling, but I have no one to look after them and I need to take them with me. -
What travel cages are best? I usually have someone to look after the pets but this time there isn't any choices. I am going on a trip that is around 2 hours (3-4 if traffic) so I am planning on getting a big one. I don't really want one more than £15 but I doubt travel cages are that expensive anyway.
Should I take my normal cage? But that takes up pretty much the whole back row of seats, which we can do, but I am worried something would go wrong.
Also, I am going away tomorrow or the day after so I need it tomorrow so nothing online. I'm thinking PetsAtHome or something.
Also, I have heard cucumbers are good substitutes for water, is they any other snack treats that are good for trips?

Re: Hamster Travel Cage
Whilst your hamster is actually travelling in the car it's usually safer for them to travel in a smaller space such as in a carrier or small cage. Something like this is a popular choice: https://www.feedem.co.uk/small-anima...-medium-p16526
You'll need to give them a water source (cucumber is usually the best choice), something to nest in and some food/dog biscuit but things like wheels aren't really needed whilst you are in transit. I travel a fair bit with my hamsters as we go to shows and I tend to find that they'll go to sleep anyway.
In terms of the cage whilst you're actually on holiday then a normal cage is the best option if you can take it as it will give your hamster some familiarity but if not something like a lightweight bin cage could be an option and I know some people use things like the Large Wire cage from Pets at Home but these cost about £25 brand new, however it'll give you an idea on the sort of sizes people might use.

Re: Hamster Travel Cage
Thanks! I Actually have the medium wire cage, so I may use it. I actually just remembered as you mentioned.
I think I will get that travel cage, I have just looked on the PetsAtHome website and they have the same one but £6.00.
Just wondering, should I still use food bowls or should I scatter feed? Or does it not really matter?

Re: Hamster Travel Cage
Personally I use a cheap "bug carrier". Its about $3 and made of hard plastic with good ventilation.

Re: Hamster Travel Cage
That's cheap. But is it American? I don't have much time to wait, even if next day delivery.

Yes, I think Lauukin is referring to an American product but you could probably find similar in the reptile section of a pet shop. I've got a couple of the £6 plastic fish tanks from Wilko that I used when transporting my hams once but they don't have a handle: Wilko Fish Tank Assorted Colours 10L at wilko.com

Re: Hamster Travel Cage
I've always just used a 10 gallon fish tank as a travel cage/carrier. It's pretty small, but fits all the essentials, and can be stuffed full of bedding to avoid jostling during trips. This is always what I've used

Re: Hamster Travel Cage
I use this Ferplast carrier for my hamster and we tend to do a fair bit of travelling between houses and the occasional hamster show. I normally put in a bendy bridge and a food bowl with very deep bedding (up to the ventilation slits). I scatter feed the food and put the cucumber in the bowl. I also put a chew toy in and a Whimzee. This generally keeps my hamster happy and he is pretty used to travelling.
Regarding the travel cage, the one I linked does come in medium and small as well, but the small is way too tiny to keep a hamster in and the medium is lower quality (I had two and they both broke, whereas I've had the large one for quite a few years with regular use).
How long are you planning to go away for? It isn't ideal, but you can leave a hamster alone for up to three days, as long as they have more than enough food and a second bottle.
Taking their normal cage when you arrive would be better, but the Pets At Home medium would be alright for a short amount of time.

I am going away for a week and a few days. It really makes my upset I am potentially stressing my hamster but I have to take the risk.
