Lightbulb Habitrail OVO Studio

I have had this cage, the Habitrail OVO Studio, for a couple months now and I definitely have some pros and cons. I'll start with pros:
This cage is quite large (For a dwarf hamster)
This cage isn't very noisy (the sound is pretty much just a low rumble)
The cage is quite cute
Cons:
This cage is very time consuming to clean
The cage has bad ventilation, (I'd recommend connecting this cage with another wired cage by snipping the wires and putting in the tube)
This cage doesn't show your hamster, as well as a wired cage does.
In the main part of the cage, my Angel (my winter white) can easily climb out and run around on my counter. The base isn't very tall.
I wasn't able to put the tubes upright as Angel was unable to climb up them, she was too small.

I honestly would only recommend this cage if you were connecting it with a cage with good ventilation and this not being your only cage as it would be too small. Also, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who doesn't like cleaning their cage for hours and doesn't clean their cage often.

The MAJOR reason I opted for Habitrail was because I did NOT want my hamsters to have cataracts in old age. Plastics absorb UV radiation.

I love the OVO Den. Just lift up cover it will block the hamster. Pull out the white base. Dump sand and then add sand is a daily exercise requiring less than 20 seconds only.

You can also add your favorite water bottle instead of the one supplied.

See photos.

It's curious, I have the habitrail ovo loft (I don't use it as a cage, I use it on playtime) with the maze, two dens, and a couple of tubes and extensions and I think that its bigger pro is that it's easy to access the ham and it's easy to clean.

However, in my opinion, its bigger con is that they are very small. The ovo loft is twice bigger than the studio, and it's far from ideal. It doesn't allow to have proper enrichment and I think that in general, it isn't suitable for any species by its own. The ventilation is really poor too.

Your hamster isn't going to get cataracts from being in a wired cage. Normal levels of UV are extremely unlikely to give your hamster cataracts and some UV is needed for them to be healthy, just like with humans. Plastic cages do not absorb uv radiation and all that would happen from keeping your hamster in a habitrail is it's more likely to overheat from the poor ventilation (not to mention, the cages are extremely small and poorly made).

If you'd like to keep your hamster in a plastic cage, please consider there's much larger and safer options such as : the Duna Multy, Duna Fun Large, or making a bin cage that's at least 70x40cm.

I connect multiple OVO Home. The total land area is actually more than 70X40 anyway.

As to ventilation, they thermoventilate themselves. If too cold they snuggle together to sleep. If too hot they sleep in the OVO den, with sand & shredded tissue as a nest.

Also they like plugging the ventilation holes themselves with bedding. Go figure!

I actually was very concerned about ventilation too until they started plugging the ventilation holes themselves!

Pls see below picture. When I was using Carefresh all the ventilation holes were solidly plugged to my amazement!

Now I changed to compressed wood pellets. They tried again but failed coz the wood pellets roll down! Hamster 0 Ventilation 1

That doesn't matter, they need a single surface of atleast 70x40cm to run around and burrow in. Connecting small cages will not not work.

Also, I meant ventilation as in the air from outside the cage that goes in and out of the cage. If there's not enough fresh air ventilation then it will cause respiratory and other health problems.
I have no idea what thermoventilate means but I could only find it used in the context of ovens so are you thinking of a different word?

How many hamsters are you keeping together and what species are they? Groups and pairs definitely do better in single space cages than in modular units.

I mentioned in another thread but wood pellets aren't really a suitable bedding since it's too hard on their tiny paws and doesn't allow them to burrow properly

I know about the single space for hamster group thing

Actually I cut off the connection and seperated them as experiment but they went frantic scratching the connection barrier trying to meet up. So I reconnected them again. Then they were like inseperable for sometime after that. Very afraid some bad guy will separate them!

So I let things be.

Actually FYI I let them chose themselves what bedding they wanted themselves. I bought Carefresh, Aspen Wood Shavings, Sand, Compressed wood pellets and Timothy hay.

ALL was deep frozen for more than 7 days.

They refused to enter the area with carefresh.

Loved the sand and was ok with the compressed wood pellets. So am I staying there or they staying there?

Did you let your hamster choose?

Hamsters will also eat chocolate of you give then the choice, doesn't mean it's safe for them.

You said in the other thread they used the carefresh cage but didn't spend much time in it but now you're saying they refused to enter the cage with it?? Also if you care so much about your hamsters opinion why didn't you give them the sand since they preferred it?

Actually, the single space thing goes for all hamsters. When there is a single hamster living in multiple cages without a direct connection, it doesn't allow for a proper space to run around in. The hamster feels trapped. Habitrail ovo would only work in the situation where it is connected to a cage that is larger than the minumum cage size.
