If you had spoken to the detolf people. Quite a lot of them HAD to chop off some space before the hamster was comfortable. Some increase the land area gradually. Some still restrict to a smaller space permanently.

It depends on the hamster.

I used to put sand in the den, as it was a great place to put it due to the holes being a bit higher up, but since I've run out of sand (I ordered more) it is currently just a den. I'm actually making Angel a new cage right now, and I'm considering connecting both of them.
