Default Hagen Zoo Zone 2 - Cage Review

http://www.feedem.co.uk/small-animals-4 ... 2-6099.htm

This is meant to be a guinea pig cage, but can be adapted to accomodate hamsters
Suitable for all hamster species as it is a large cage
Dimensions are: 39"x20"x14.5" (99cmx51cmx37cm)
Price: £40 - £60 new

This is how I initially had it when I first put my 2 dwarfs in it

Over time, I added more things - one great thing is that you can spend all your money on houses and accessories cos there is so much space! or is that a bad thing?!

I have now added a platform, made out of 2 medium and 2 small 'Play Sitx' - it is on metal supports...

Because I will soon be using this cage for a Syrian, and it now has a higher platform, I will mesh the bars - I have done this before with my mouse's Zoo Zone 2

bound with wire

covered with tape to protect my fingers

This can make the lid more stiff to open, so I'd be intrigued to see how other people have meshed their's

This is how my Mouse's Zoo Zone 2 was done up (it's a bit different now - more houses etc.)

Good Points
  • very spacious
platforms can be added, as there are some pre-drilled holes at each end
high enough to fit a large wheel
can be found cheaply second hand
    great for preventing bar chewing

Bad Points
  • bars may need to be meshed to prevent escapes
need to add loads of climbing toys, as there are no bars to climb
hole for water bottle is high - need to add a step
only 1 level, unless you make your own

I'd love to see other people's Zoo Zone 2s!

Excellent review and I love the space in this cage. You will need a fair space to accommodate this cage wont you but the space would make any hammy happy I am sure. Pity they don't to a finer mesh lid. Thank you.

I think it's an amazing looking cage - sadly too big for me to accommodate several of these, though I wish I could give all my hammies a bit more space.

It's such a popular cage on all the forums perhaps, in time, they might market a version directly at hamster owners with a narrow barred lid - you never know

Its a lovely big space and you've filled it wonderfully. The willow platform/shelf is fab!

Looks great!!

I attached mesh to my zz1 with cable ties. It was stiff to start off with but then it was fine.

My Mum managed to break all the yellow clips off a couple of months ago though - so annoyed.

Thats a good review, I love the space, not sure whether it would fit on my shelves but it would offer the hamster so much room. I'm so torn between tank and wire cages as my hamsters seen to love to climb but Desi can't in his tank even though it is huge.

It's going to be a very lucky Syrian

Here's Tinkerbell's current Zoozone 2 set up:

I think we're going to get a hole drilled in a better place for a water bottle, currently I'm using a dish - the water is yellow because it has some vitamin/mineral stuff in it (Dr Squiggles). We also hope to set up a wooden ledge at one end soon to make better use of the space. The large plastic thing is actually a storage container upside down with a door cut in to it. The lid is a piece of mesh wired on and a critter cage lid which isn't fixed on, it just sits in place.

What kind of mesh did you use? Where did you get it? Is it available online?

Hi! I used a Critter Cage base - the sort of cage you have for rats - they come with a mesh base to use for chinchillas but I never use it for rats. The mesh fits perfectly! If you know any 'ratty' people it may be worth asking around as most rat people who have this cage will get rid of this bit. I used 1cm x 1cm mesh for the very end bit and used garden wire to hold it in place. I melted holes in the plastic lid so that I could secure the wire ok.

You can buy mesh sheets from DIY stores otherwise.
