If you go through the DIY section here you can find step-by-step accounts of others' experiences building them. Whether they're easy or not depends partly on your skills and partly on your tools. Having the right tools can make the process much smoothers but if you don't know how to use those tools it won't really matter

As for whether it's fun, well that's up to you; If you don't like to use tools or be creative then probably not! The thrill of making something that you know is going to be customized to your tastes and your hamster's needs can make even a difficult task rewarding

My bin cage took a long time to make because I had to melt the plastic rather than cut it, and our smoke alarm is very sensitive- also because I had to keep going back to the hardware store for more/the right nuts and bolts! But in the end, it was really rewarding, and they'll provide a bigger home than a lot of hamster cages on the market.

I finally got an exacto knife tip for my soldering iron, and it makes it sooo much easier. I made my second one in about three hours

It was definitely fun for me as i love DIY-ing. But whether it's hard or not: like BrainGirl said- depends on your skills and tools. I used my dad's tools which are high quality: he doesn't get crap ones as he uses them often for his work. I'm not a highly skilled person but as long as you know how to properly use the tools then it's fairly easy tbh. If you need detailed instructions then feel free to pm me or look in the DIY section. There's a great guide by morganel, sorry if i got the name wrong. Anyway... He made a really nice bin cage and the guide is written very neatly

It's definitely a lot of fun to make and worth it because you're making a home for your little one. It does take some work and time though, if you want to make a good, solid one. It took me a couple of hours with the help of my sister and I'm so proud of it, even if it had a little mistake here and there (safe, of course, for the hammy though). You'll feel really proud and accomplished after you make one!

As people have already said, I think it depends partly on how much of a DIYer you are and the tools you're using. I hated the first time I tried cutting into plastic because it was so difficult for me to do and not break the plastic with a box cutter. However, later I got a soldering iron which helped and if I don't want to deal with the fumes and/or needing to go outside to do it (it being cold and all), I also now have one of those super-fine saw blades from X-acto that I can use to cut plastic more smoothly than a box cutter. After the soldering iron and X-acto saw, I found the bin-cage making process went rather quickly. All told, it probably took me an hour or two once I got the hang of cutting the plastic (with the hot knife--it'll probably take longer without). I like making cages since you can customize it to what you want/need
