I used that litter for my rats, I found it quite dusty. My robo's tank has 3 different substrates for different textures - I placed a 'grass mat' (available from P@H or online) at the right of the cage - this provides a flat surface for the wheel to be steady on (helped by a smooth rock on the wheel base.) Then in the middle of the cage I have P@H wood litter - I started using them when I ran out of normal shavings & decided to stuck to them. Then I have a corner or a strip of woodshavings on the left, which I bury rotastak tubes under & they dig around in there Then I have a tupperware dish of bathing sand.

If you can get it & it's not too expensive then 'Aubiose' would be a great substrate - although I have a feeling it comes in bales
Thanks for the detailed info, I am very much the novice with these little critters! I use P@H Wood litter for the ferrets litter trays so always have that. I did wonder about using some of that but thought that they may not like it or be able to tunnel in like they do with the shavings. I haven't seen a 'grass mat' so will go and see about that. I have changed from the wheels (Rolly and Silent Spinner) to the Flying Saucer and have a Small and a Regular, they both love them and they seem to be able to stay aboard for much longer than they could the wheels, also on the plus side they are very quiet and take up little room, giving more 'viewing'.

On the whole these two are having a ball and using everything and I am really happy that i changed to this 'tank'

I have the Megazorb & Auboise noted so that I can perhaps try that if I ever track it down

(Rachel has a smug look on her face as she posts this...)

I think I just got the bargain of the century on eBay and bought a (obviously used) large Perfecto tank for £5! Yes, that's right, £5!! No damage to it, all shelves in tact and top still fully operational. Having to drive for nearly an hour to pick it up but most certainly worth it. Can't wait to get it set up

I want one. Maybe when I get a second hamster. Toby likes climbing too much and must live in a cage.
