Default Gabber Criceto Lux ~ Cage Review

This cage is a tank-style cage and measures roughly 57x40x27cm. It is a smaller version of the Gabber Rex, which is very popular, especially with members of this forum. It is a suitable size for one or two Dwarf Hamsters, and a smaller Syrian. A larger Syrian may find it a little cramped.

It is a sturdy well built cage, with a bottom tray of coloured plastic and a clear plastic clip-on lid and mesh panel. Access to the hamster is easy, by removing the lid or opening to door. This cage may not be suitable for bar-chewing Syrians, as if they stood on a platform they might be able to reach the bars, but our hamster never tried to do so.

Inside the cage there are two removable plastic platforms with three ladders. The ladders appear quite steep but even older hamsters can happily scramble up them. The platforms come with metal ‘springs’ attached, but we removed these in case a hamster got its foot trapped. Instead we placed some piping in the hole, which our ham loved to scramble up. There are some plastic pots which fit in the holes in the platforms which act as food dishes.

We find that bedding can be placed under one of the platforms, and this provides the ham with a large spacious nest.

The cage comes with a wheel attached to one platform, but we found this wheel was too small for a Syrian. Silent Spinner wheels can be slotted over the wheel holders to stop them rattling around, and Wodent wheels can be placed in the same space, but they take up quite a bit of room and can restrict the amount of space available for toys etc.

We found that the water bottle hole provided was too high for a Dwarf hamster to reach, so we drilled out our own hole in the base in the middle of one of the long sides. We also drilled out two holes to thread a piece of elastic through. I believe that new Luxes come with a bird-type bottle which sits over the platform. Bear in mind that older hamsters, Dwarfs in particular, may have problems climbing the ladders to reach this bottle.

There is space to fit a few toys in this cage, but with both platforms and a wheel this can be limited. If you feel your ham would enjoy having more toys than both platforms, you could remove one. We had a sand bath, wheel, both platforms and some piping in one of the platform holes in our set-up.

This cage costs about £29.99. We got ours off Ebay, where they are frequently listed, but I have seen it in our local pet shop as well. I have seen it listed as both Gabber and Montagna Lux.

All in all I think this cage is very well designed and also well priced. It is a good size for Dwarf and Syrian hamsters and looks attractive. Hamsters seem very happy living here! It is easily cleaned and the hamsters are accessed easily which is important during taming. I think this is generally a very good cage for hamsters, and our residents have always been happy here!

Merged for Bunsey

I use this cage for single winter white dwarves and i have to say it's my favourite cage for this purpose. It would also be suitable for a chinese or pair of robos or campbells dwarfs. I would say it was too small for a syrian or pair of winter whites.

It measures about L 22.5" (57cm) x W 15.5" (40cm) x H 10.5" (26.5cm)

It comes with plastic shelving, wire springs, a plastic tiny hut and a water bottle, but i throw all of this stuff away and design the layout myself! I worry about legs getting trapped in the springs.

The water bottle is like a bird water bottle, with a flat open bottom where the hamster just laps up the water. However, it could easily get full of bedding or be splashed everywhere.

I buy a new water bottle from Wilkos or any pet shop and attach it by putting the spout through the small round hole at the end. Then get a piece of bendy wire and wrap this around the bottle and poke the two ends of the wire through the two tiny holes on the top of the cage, above the spout hole.

for a dwarf, you then need to get a bendy bridge, such as those shown in the pictures to enable the hamster to reach the bottle. They have no problem finding it.

For the rest of the cage, i add my own wooden hut for sleeping, a wheel and other toys. You can have the bedding as deep as you like as it can't be flung out. For dwarfs, there's no need to use the grill that comes on the top, as long as you don't have very tall toys that they could use to climb out.

Here's some pics of my set-ups.

Hi cool they are good cages and they are good if you don't want a big gabber one. We had our gabber with the spring type tubes in the holes neither of ours got their feet caught in them we used them for syrians though. These makers of the cages don't really think about the water bottles do they and it us that has to come up with ideas for bottles. We used a pottery dish for ours as they couldn't grasp the bottle bless them.

Thanks for the review.

It is a bird drinker - I've seen exactly the same ones for sale in the bird section of the pet shop. My first 2 Luxes didn''t come with them so I didn't even realise that there was a gap/hole for them to fit into...oops!....luckily, its too small for the inhabitants to escape, and I cover it up by using the spring in front of it. But, my second two Luxes (bought a week later - but from a different shop) had the bird drinker....its a real pain because if you don't fit it, it leaves a hole. I have young robos in one of my cages so I've ended up fitting the bird drinker to stop them escaping but I don't use it for water - I use a normal water bottle on the other side of the cage instead.

on one of my 2nd hand Luxes the hole had been chewed to make it bigger, so i put a piece of cardboard over it and masking taped it on. It's only for a WW and she never goes near it. i don't think she can reach it actually, but i thought i'd tape it up to be on the safe side! Splodge just has the hole and he never touches it.

I've seen Colin sniffing out of his, but he doesn't chew because as far as he's concerned a Lux is a massive cage! put one of my hams in there and they'd be like what's this prison mamma?!

This is a great cage the Rex's predecessor! I found this in an Acorn pet shop. It housed my hamster Maisie very well for her years, and survived several long journeys too! After Maisie it was Charlie's turn, she loves it as well. I also replaced the water bottle. I wish I had kept the cage, but I was told no more hamsters at the time
