Smile hamster heaven cage

i have just bought the hamster heaven cage and whilst it is good quality and big beware of the tubes as the hamster just lives in them now and my daughter cannot get to him, i have had to order some tube stoppers so i can remove the tubing as he seems to not be using the large cage and living in the tubes.. has anyone else had this problem, i also have never had tubes before and as the hammy is living there they smell and are just not hygenic. also the no instrucitons with the cage can be a problem if you are not on the ball with construcitng things, luckily we managed it between 3 of us but it was not easy.

This is not a cgae I have personally, but I always recommend that all tubes are left off from any cage untill the hamster is tame. It is very difficult to get a hold of your hamster when they keep running off up the tubes where they know that you cant get to them.

Also they are not good for your hamster to sleep in, they do get very smelly and damp with condensation and is not very hyginic or healthy for the hamster at all. Agian, if this is happening, I always suggested removing the tubes for 2 weeks, let your hamster establish a nest elsewhere in the cage and then replace the tubes again. Hamsters like to feel safe and secure and so usually like to squeeze themselves in to as small a space as possible! Its certainly not unusual.

The hamster haven is a good cage though and is a really good size. We are always on the look out for the 'perfect' cage, but one doesnt seem to exist! Also different things suit different people and different hamsters. I am sure that your little hammy will be very happy in his cage.

I havent got the HH but i did have the same problem in the savic peggy metro, i bought tube stoppers because he was living in the tubes including peeing in them, which was hard to clean,so the HH without the tubes is a good idea because its a big cage so your hamster will be fine

welcome to hamster central btw

Thats not strictly true - before Luna would just walk out of her cage and was living in the tubes (not good, they have been removed for this reason) I would unattach one end of the tubes and she would walk out of them onto my hand or into her ball so it was quite easy to get her out. Obviously this wont work with all hamsters, certainly completely untame ones but it worked for me and Luna

I only use an 'elbow' tube for Suggs to get into the penthouse directly from below. Originally she was blocking up the long tube with woodshavings, which wasn't really a problem but it used to take her forever to dig her way out xD

I blocked the tubes on Pudding's HH too, though she's never lived in it with the tubes installed, so she doesn't go looking for the holes or anything. I just read too much about problems with them; nesting, pee, condensation, difficult to clean, bad for taming... not worth the hassle if you ask me. It's nice to have the potential for extending it though.
