Default ferplast duna fun review

http://trade.ferplast.com/fercatal/dep/57921499.jpg
This is the Duna Fun cage. I'm sorry but I haven't had time to transfer my own yet.

The Ferplast Duna normally sells for between £25-£40. It is half a wire cage and half a tank ie. it has bars but a tank top and it is suitable for all the Dwarf species. The bars are so thin that not even a robo could get through them. I would however say that it is not suitable for more than two Dwarfs. It is not in my opinion suitable for Syrians as the tubes might cause some difficulty, as a larger ham may get stuck in the tunnels.

Pros
Easy to clean apart from tubes.
Lost of room for a single or pair of Dwarf hamsters.
Bars are thin so no chance of an escape unless you leave the top open.
Good ventilation.
Can expand the tunnels to make a rotosatak system if you want while still having one main big cage area which is a good size

Cons
Poor access ~ only door is in the roof.
Lots of hiding space for an untamed hamster.
Limited space for larger wheel making it definitely unsuitable for a Syrian.
Limited toy placement space.
If your hamster uses the tunnel as a toilet urine can exit the tunnel as there are holes on the top and bottom.
Unsuitable for a large Syrian.

You can cut the cage down in size as the tank top can clip to the base, so you can tame you hamster and then add the rest of the cage, solving the hiding space issue when your hamster isn't yet tame.
You could also wrap the outside of the tunnel with some paper stopping urine escaping, but this may provide limitted ventilation.

Overall quite a good cage which you can solve its faults with a bit of imagination and effort and still give your hamster plenty of space and a good home.

Good review Matty, just wanted to point out that this is the duna fun, not the normal duna
I also have never seen it sold for less than £45 new, where did you see it for less than this?

in a pet shop near me could have been on sale though I just didn’t pay attention and bought it anyway as I was in a rush and needed a cage quickly. Though I did look around and saw it marked at 45 quid as well.

I have to say I would add 'fragile' to the list of cons....

The one I have (which is the original cage Herbert came in, not one I purchased) has a shelf missing and the lid was broken. The clip that connects the wired bit to the bottom was also broken. Mine is held together with garden wire! :P

I think the concept is a great one, but the cage is badly made and isn't worth the money in my opinion. You'd be far better off spending your money on a Gabber Rex!

*However* it does make a great add-on cage, I have found it easy to attach to my Zoozone / Rody Cavia.

I wouldn't use this cage for a Syrian hamster either.

I have this cage for three of my hamsters, two dwarfs and one robo (not all in together!!! they have a cage each) and I really like this cage. I have the medium silent spinner in two of my cages and I think that is the biggest wheel that would fit but it is a good size for dwarf hamsters.

The bars have been ok with my robo, I think these cages are designed with dwarf hamsters in mind.

I donot use the water bottle that comes with them as mine never seem to like the sippy bottle.

There is a good floor space with the extra levels and the deep base is ideal for lots of bedding.

If you are going to consider getting one then my advice would be to shop around as the price can vary considerably.

When I worked in the petshop we used to know this cage as the Duna "not so" Fun. So hard to put together, it arrives flat packed in so many small pieces! Each one took me about half and hour to put together.

I currently have my new Syrian hamster in my Duna funa after my hamster that was in it passed on and I dicided against putting an untamed hamster in Rotastak. In order to give him more room, for a bigger wheel and space for another house/flying saucer i took out the shelf that was on the bottom and attatched a bird ladder to the top shelf so he could get onto it. There is a good ammount of hight and space now so i was able to place a syrian sized wheel into it. Im able to fit in his foodbowl/sand bath/a freestanding syrian sized wheel/flying saucer/snack shack/hamster igloo and lots of tubes for him to play in. I will post some photos of my mods when i take some

Sorry they are so small, taken on my phone. I seem to have lost my digital camera (I did clean i out yesterday, Milo is messy tho! lol) Im thinking of upgrading him to the Maxi Duna. But he seems happy in this one. There is plenty of space for lots of toys for him, and with the mods iv made there is enough space for a syrian sized wheel.

For my experiences with the Duna Fun. ...Where do I start?

My Robo girls absolutely love it. Even more so than I do... I often see them racing up and down the ramps every evening.

The wheel is rubbish, it's extremely noisy. Again I have a silent spinner in there but it sits on the lower shelf. This is not ideal as it keeps sliding about. I will be having a play around with the layout to see if I can get the spinner sitting on the cage floor. I have already tried and failed at fixing it on the bars. Most likely I'll remove the shelves or at least the upper shelf.

The water bottle that came with the cage is beyond utter, I can't even say the word. Not matter what I did the thing wouldn't stop leaking, so I replaced it with a regular bottle.

The house is pointless, it's never used other than as a toilet. It slides about because the shelves will not sit straight, and there is no room for it on the floor of the cage. The tubes were just used as a toilet as well.

I wouldn't recommend it for a Syrian, especially a nervous one. There's no room for extra toys anyway and I would rather have a set up with lots of floorspace and toys that can be changed about every so often. Again the access is only on the top of the cage. Finally, cleaning it is really time consuming compared with all my other cages. My rats take less time to clean out than the Robos!
