Default Savic Rody (including Deluxe) ~ Cage Review

I thought i would do a review on the Savic Rody cage. This was the first cage i bought for my chinese hamsters and i would like to start by pointing out that this cage is really only recommended for dwarves. I would say 2 maximum to allow more floor space for burrowing which mine certainly loved to do

So here is the basic picture of the Savic Rody Deluxe

Size: 55 cm x 39 cm x 26 cm without the tubes being built up.
With the tubes, the cage becomes 47cm high.
Hamster cage equipped with platform, drinking bottle, feeding bowl, tubes and hamster wheel.

This cage was perfectly fine for 2 dwarves, however i did have to separate and ended up buying the standard Rody. Over a few months i made myown variations to them.

Here is a picture of Sweets cage, I removed the original wheel that came with it as it squeeked too much for my liking and replaced it with a silent spinner (regular). In this photo, the green platform is still there to hold the water bottle and bowl in place and also as an extra hidey hole which is good use of space.

As with a lot of other cages you can make your own variations to adjust to your own taste or your hamsters. In the end i ended up getting rid of the green platform, but..... cut it so that i still had the end for holding the water bottle. This allowed more space for a separate bed and other toys

You can see the green bit with the bottle in the right hand side of this photo

After Sour died, i decided to make use of all of the tubes and connected the two together allowing much more space for Sweet and her toys.

Play cage

Sleeping/eating/drinking cage

So, overall here is what i think

Pros -
* Great cage for making sure your dwarves don't escape
* Tank style making it easy for interacting with your hamster for taming etc.
* Priced around £24.99 (from Pets @ Home) making it affordable
* Additional tubes can be purchased from some pet stores and online.
* Great for cleaning, remove the lid and all you need to worry about is the base, unless you use tubes that is.
* Secure clips on both sides of cage
* you can easily move everything around to give more variety for your hamster

Cons -
* if using tubes, can be awkward to tame hamsters as they tend to hide away in them
* tubes are a bit time consuming to clean/dry
* the wheel that comes with it, squeeks quite a bit, hence the reason i had to replace both of mine with silent spinners (worth it though!)

Ermmmm... cant seem to think of any other cons, feel free to comment if you have had any other experiences or comments. If i think of anything else i will edit and notify

All in all, a really good cage for the price and everything you get in it. Spares are easy to find too, some websites sell spare bases/lids/tubes etc.

Hope this is ok and everyone can understand it, i tend to get carried away when i type!

I have the standard version of this cage, that i got second hand with a rescue i took in. Over all i have to say it's a good cage but, I've had problems with the base of the cage being stained with wee, which is difficult to get off.

Great review - a Rody is something I don't have (though I've used one briefly that I borrowed from Basia and I'll be borrowing one for our new robo to stay in initially at the weekend) and I've been thinking of trying to pick up a cheap one off ebay at some point to keep as a spare for litters etc.

What I do like about it is the hinged lid - I actually find that better than the fiddly, slidy grilles on the Gabbers.

Julie you are more than welcome to keep the cage Piggy (his nickname) is in at the moment, I don't really need it since I have the rody that Titch (female robo's name) is in and she will be living in the Rex anyway. I also have an Imac spare, as well as a gabber lux and some other cage so I'm not sure my dad would be happy to have it back lol. It didn't cost me anything since it was the cage he came in

Thank you. Great review. I like your water bottle attachment idea when removing the platform. Looks like a nice robust cage for dwarfs.

Wow! Well - only if you are absolutely sure you don't want it back, I don't want to take advantage ...I know I could put it to good use

Jayne, I meant to say I liked your ingenious water bottle modification as well ..that may be something I'll be copying!

I like the Savic Rody a lot - it's of a good build-quality, as you might expect from Savic, and it's eminently affordable.

I agree with the comment on the dwarves - which is where this cage is ideal, for the smaller hamsters. There's enough floor room for a suitable selection of toys, and it was deep enough for me to install some tunnels for my boys.

The green section, as in the pics above, forms an ideal little house - my only complaint being the position of the waterbottle, which is exposed at the bottom.

Tupac, who'd decided to nest underneath the bottle, enjoyed chewing as much as the next hamster - until he punctured the plastic, and got a drenching! Cue one ruffled, distinctly sulking, Winter White!

At £24.99, superb - ideal for starters!

i love your design there with the tubes. i never thought of that. i wonder how they got that robo inside the tubes on the first pic, cos no way he climbed the vertical tube!

i have to say i love the rody for a dwarf. I prefer it to the ferplast duna because the duna has ridges that are difficult to clean and it's hard to attach a bottle other than the rubbish sippy. The rody's water is a little low down, which is my only criticism of this cage... oh and that my robos can't get up the ramp, so i snip it off and use a toy so they can climb accross

it used to be £26 in p@h, but has been increased to £29 which is taking the mick a bit when you can get a gabber for £35!

I've got a Rody now (thanks to Leanne ) for Bean the robo - I have to say it's a great cage for a single robo, a fair bit of floorspace and very easy to clean out with that ready made bed under the shelf. I have had a few problems with the water bottle leaking though.

I also like the Gabber Lux for single dwarfies - exactly the same size and very simillar design, my two ww's are in Luxes.

Our P@H has Rody's (on special offer, I assume) at £24.99 at the moment.

I am afraid my own review of this cage will be very negative. I have one and find it unusable. It is there only for holding hamsters during cage cleans.

The problems are as follows...

1. poor ventilation, despite the strictest hygiene. The air is quickly very stale inside the tank.

2. size... I find the size inadequate even for dwarfs and their frustration is displayed by how much time is spent in the wheel.

3. design faults... the drinking spout and bottom of the wheel are set so low that a decent amount of substrate can't be put in the cage. The wheel becomes jammed, which adds to the animals frustration and the drinking spout, too easily makes contact with substrate, causing regular leaks.

I find that hamsters need space to run, bars to climb and gnaw on, good ventilation and deep substrate and this tank offers none of the above.
