Default Word of Warning-Habitrail twist

Hi everyone, i recently bought a hamster after weeks of research and Hamster Central had been essential in that research. Now three weeks into ownership and all supplies bought I decided to join the forum(I know this is not essential to my point but I just thought to make it known anyway). After looking around the site and finding this thread I simply couldnt resist posting a word of warning!DO NOT BUY THE HABITRAIL TWIST CAGE! As I said having bought my supplies(including cage) it was too late to return anything or go through such fuss. When the habitrail twist cage arrived I was appauled at the meagre size of it. A tiny arm span in length the cage is not suitable to house an insect in nevermind a syrian hamster. So as i said i decided to keep the cage and just buy tons and tons of tubes and the like for extra room and the thoughts of adding a bin cage to it. Just to point out I never found any reviews on this specific cage despite all vigorous research so i thought id attend to it myself. If anyone, like me, out there is planning on buying this cage please dont, youd be much better off with the ovo loft or something. I realy am not exaggerating in my explanation of the cage.
Hope this helps!
(p.s i am not knocking anyone who already owns this cage i am merely giving my personal opinion on it).

I deem anything habitrail or ovo to be unsuitable for syrians. Too Small, Most of the times no corners. They must be like a greenhouse in the summer.

All Habitrails are unsuitable I would say, especially for syrians. Not just size (though that is a huge problem for a number of reasons: not enough toys can fit, a big enough wheel can't fit, no continuous running space) but because of ventilation & heat regulation, unsuitable in appealing to a hamster's wall-hugging instincts, the list goes on...
A bin cage is a great way to go for your ham! You will be looking for something about 80x50cm in base size for a bin, that provides running space and make sure the bin is high enough for at least an 8" wheel to fit. We'd love to see pics of it (or a possible commercial cage that you opt for) soon!
Oh and welcome to HC!

I hate anything Habitrail or Rotastak due to the fact they are made to look appealing to kids and do not at all consider the hamster's needs. Also, ventilation is poor, they are tiny cages and tubes are no good due to condensation problems.

I think the majority of the forum hates anything made by Habitrail and Rotastak (and many hate the critter trails too). I'm one of these people.
I prefer bin cages to anything else really, I just love how easy to customise they are!

I agree with most things stated here about the habitrail and rotastak and the like and have decided i will add a bin cage to his existing suite, I want the best for my hamster.
I thank all of you for your comments!

I just google-imaged the Habitrail Twist; I agree it's not suitable, but if you can't get a refund, could you use it as a carrier?

A bin cage would be brilliant though!

Thats not a bad idea pomegranate, though i do have an actual habitrail transport unit, i could use the "cage" instead in case for some reason he needed an extended stay.
Thanks for the great idea!

I wouldn't rule out using a habitrail twist or ovo my self. I think they are suitable for use with syrians, but only when used as an addition to a larger cage. They make great areas for your hamster to explore and create dens. I would recommend removing the wheels that come with the ovos due to the fact that they can injure themselves on the groove cut down the middle that is meant to allow food and waste to pass through. I would also recommend the OVO tubes because they are a bit larger and allow syrians to fit through them better.

And the fact that they are mostly acrylic shouldn't be an issue if you keep your hamster in a climate controlled home and keep up with cleaning it weekly.
