Thought I would add my Barney pics to the review thread - it's currently on offer on Zooplus for £39.90 (typical reduced 2 weeks after I bought it!)

My current set up

Missy chilling in her wheel

I love this cage - thanks to the reviewers on here for helping me choose.

Ordered it on a Tuesday evening and it arrived on the Friday morning, everything in pristine condition. Good deep base, so allowing plenty of substrate for a keen digger. The shelf and house that come with are easy to put together, and nicely sturdy - I didn't use the ramp provided, as I had a set of medium playsticks from P@H, which do the same job and take up less room. The wheel that comes with it is pretty much useless, but it doesn't really matter as the cage is plenty big enough to take a big wheel.

Loving the narrow bar spacing, as it seems to discourage bar chewing. Missy was in a Cambridge before, which all my other hammies had seemed perfectly happy with, and she just bar chewed relentlessly, even though she had playtime in her ball pretty much every night. Other than a couple of lapses when she's got overexcited the bar chewing has pretty much stopped (so far! ).

The doors on the side are a little small, which might be a problem if you're still taming your hamster. There is a large door in the top, but I don't really use it, as I just put madam in her ball and take the cage part off completely for cleaning.

I adore this cage. And so does Jeffro my syrian. So much space. Love the platform and especially the house that come with the Barney. Very well made and great value for money. I paid 59.90 for mine a few months back which i would happily pay again, however if you can buy whilst on offer its a bonus. The only downside in my opinion is the wheel that comes with the cage, a bit flimsy, abd extremley noisy. I swappedmine for a senior wodent wheel
Here's Jeffro's current set up.

Wow it looks like the Barney cage is liked and is a good recommendation. I was starting to feel a bit overwhelmed by all the choices! I understand I would need to purchase a bigger wheel but what other "accessories" should I be looking at to start with?

The Barney cage is now 100cm rather than 82cm so it is even better! It already comes with a shelf and a good house, so once you have a wheel you'd just be looking at:

Deep substrate for digging
A sandbath (some sort of dish with chinchilla bathing sand in it)
A few toys - cardboard tubes, anything which makes a little hidey place maybe
Plenty of white torn up toilet paper in a heap somewhere for making a nest with
A potty litter tray - optional but I'd recommend it as it can really help save on cage cleaning and reduce smells. Wait and see where your hammy chooses to make a wee corner (it is usually in a corner somewhere, and put the litter tray there with either chinchilla sand or potty litter in it and a small bit of wee'd on substrate on top and hammy will probably just start using it straight away.

I empty the potty once a week and the rest of the cage stays dry!

This is the one I got - it fits in a corner nicely and is big enough and easy to empty and refill.
