Pregnant or Chubby?
Hi,I bought my Syrian Hamster (Bean) a few days ago from pets at home here in the UK. I know its not the best place to buy hamsters and an actual breeder is better but with the pandemic going on there isn't any available around where I live. I got her home and noticed how big she looked compared to other hamsters I know (I live with housemates who all have female Syrian hamsters).
She isn't nesting unusually, and Im not sure if she's been in contact with other hamsters or how they've been feeding her.
Im hoping she's just sporting some hamster rolls under her fur and not babies as a few people who have hamsters have asked if she's pregnant, making me a bit paranoid. I've included some photos and hoping you guys could possibly give me your opinion or advice.

Re: Pregnant or Chubby?
It's quite hard to tell from photos really. Can you post again in a few days. For the next 16 days though you do need to keep her on pregnancy watch. We can advise if she does have pups then.

Re: Pregnant or Chubby?
Thank you for your response. I spoke to Pets at Home this morning and they told me she's been on her own for the last 6 weeks so I think she's just a bit chubby. I'll keep an eye on her just in case and look for some diet options for her.

Re: Pregnant or Chubby?
Bean is a lovely colour.
Why don't you weigh her? Then you can tell if she's putting on weight or not.
I'd be careful with weight loss diets and keep in mind that in a pet shop tank hamsters have no room to exercise and the wheel they usually have is too small. Mostly they are fed a muesli mix with too much sugar and carrots. I'd give her a chance to settle in first, feed her a healthy and varied diet and make sure that she has a big enough wheel to run on with a straight back.
If she really has lived on her own for the past six weeks she won't be pregnant and could be a bit chubby because she had nothing to do but eat.
