Default Hamster baby colors?

hi, im new to breeding hamsters in specific but I do have experience in breeding other animals (gerbils, many types of fish, guinea pigs) so before anyone freaks out, I have done research and ive taken everything into consideration before I made the decision to try to breed.

I have a female Syrian hamster that's somewhat longhaired and my bf has a male blondish golden shorthaired Syrian hamster (pictures attached) and I was wondering what traits I could expect from the babies? I do not know the genetics of the parents so recessive traits are unknown.

Current setup:
she currently lives in two connected bin cages with a ton of habitrail extensions (picture attached) which can be removed for safety of the baby hamsters. I have extra cages on the side as well just incase I can't find homes for them in time.

Hi, first of all where did you and your boyfriend obtained your hamsters? As you don't know the genetics of their parents am I correct in presuming they are from a pet store?
As you said you had done your research, I am sure you will know that a lot of pet shop bought hamsters can have genetic health issues.

Also, on a previous post didn't your hamster have a lump on it's underbelly area, is that one of these hamsters or a different one? did you get that resolved/fixed?

Your hamsters are very cute, can't you just enjoy them and not breed from them? Sorry, that I haven't really answered your question, but I do think if you are going to breed you really need to be under the tutelage of a breeder that has a lot of experience and quality bred hamsters to start with.

You can probably tell I do not agree with breeding hamsters, I think there are far to many in the world already that need rescuing. I can see a need for proper breeding, to breed quality hamsters with as little defects as possible, but it's still not something I am 100% agreeable with. Sorry if that upsets you or anyone else, it is just my opinion.

I know about the possible genetic problems with petstore animals, however there arnt any reputable breeders where I live and importing a hamster can be very costly. These two hams have been very healthy so far and I havent seen any issues related yet and its a chance im willing to take because the possibility of those traits coming out negatively is low (not saying it isn't possible but it is low) and im willing to cull/give veterinary treatment as needed. I have also found that especially with fish (I know fish are different) that buying stock from different pet stores at different times gives the best genetic diversity and often leads to healthier animals. and for the other hamster, the pet store I got her from took her back and gave her vet treatment, they are very reputable and I trust they found another home for her after treatment.

How so? Culling is to keep the gene pool free of possible defects and veterinary treatment can be used for hamsters with curable ailments

I do not cull healthy animals and even then i will only cull the ones who truly do not have a chance at a good life this is a common practice in most breeding situations

If a hamster has a defect that doesn't interfere with quality of life, you home it as a pet or keep it, no need to cull it. Euthanasia for conditions causing suffering is different of course, and perhaps what you meant? Culling has a slightly different meaning.

I can't agree with what you are planning to do. I also can't agree with how you treated your previously poorly hamster and that you don't even know what happened to it. Hamsters are not disposable things just to be returned and exchanged when something is wrong with them. I do understand that this is a common practice in the USA but it doesn't mean it is right.
I really hope you change your mind re breeding.

I know that hamsters are not disposable, however it is a decision I made because i chose to give it to people who could actually provide adequate care as right now I am up to my elbows caring for my other pets and school, I was planning to do it in the summer when I have time to actually provide the attention necessary. I also don’t live in the USA, thanks.

There are no breeders in the area I live in so an apprenticeship under someone who breeds professionally would be quite impossible

Yeah that’s what I meant but couldn’t think of the word, thanks for clearing that up for me

Full situation: my current hamster is too young, she is from a pet store (yes I know) my bf has another hamster from a different pet store bought a few months before mine. His mom currently breeds mice and I help her out with it, on top of that I currently breed fish and have had previous experience with breeding gerbils and guinea pigs. The litter I planned was going to be this summer when I have time away from school. I was only planning one litter. They are both healthy and I was just wondering if someone more experienced in this field would pick out what the pups would look like and if there was any obvious things I missed. I line up homes for them usually a week in advance and usually interview people before giving them away making sure they receive proper care. I understand people don’t agree with what I’m doing however I am planning to go to school to be a Veterinarian and would like a bit of experience in many aspects of the general pet keeping field. I cannot study under an established breeder because there are none where I live so I come to this forum for advice and know how from more experienced people, thank you for your replies but I would like a response to my question if someone can give it.
