Default Could Luna have had babies???

Hi all,

I have a 12 week old Syrian female. I bought her from a pet shop 3 weeks ago yesterday.

Since she’s been home, she has been a very frightened little girl and the taming process has been slow. I cleaned her cage out on Tuesday! Since then she has built a rather large nest and appears to only be coming out of the nest for food and water. She’s no longer using her wheel or playing with her toys as she had done previously.

Could she have had babies? I can’t see into the nest with out taking the lid off and I’m reluctant to that just in case. How long should I leave her?! When I have seen her she appears well, eating normally and normal poos.

Many thanks 😃🐹

If you think she has it is always best to check...but if she is acting normally and not slowing down i doubt she has had babies. But this has never happened to me so good luck if she has had babies

As you have had her 3 weeks and have cleaned her out then it seems unlikely as pregnancy is 16 days in a syrian. You usually hear small chirps and squeaks from the pups and they will start coming out about 10 days old. I think though that you do need to check her to see if all seems to be well even if it means looking in the nest. Try and get her in to a glass jar so you can check her underneath for any signs of discharge or a messy bottom. She may well be out when you are in bed. I do hope she is OK.

Hey folks,

The little minx came out this evening and I managed to get her in to her ball (clear). She looks fine, clean bum etc. No babies in the nest! Quite relieved.

She’s been out mooching around the cage for the last hour! She’s just so scared of everything. Some days she’ll let me touch her, other days she totally freaks out! The pet shop said she was 9 weeks when I got her but I suspect she’s younger. She was teeny tiny when I bought her home!

Thank you 😊

Some baby hamsters are very scared at first and hide away. They do like to build big nests as well! It's usually recommended not to clean out for the first two weeks while they are settling in the cage and familiarising - so if you have done that may have stressed her a bit. Best to just "spot clean" mostly - ie the pee area. Full cage cleans aren't necessary or weekly. You can spot clean the pee area or use a litter tray and providing you have enough substrate in the cage (3 to 4" deep minimum) should go quite a long time doing this. Don't worry about poops - they aren't dirty or smelly -more like seeds and sometimes they eat them for extra nutrients (which is normal).

Then it's best to just do partial cleans - eg substrate one week, wheel a different week, any toys a different week again. It's also good to keep back some of the old substrate that is clean and spread it on top of the new. That way something always smells familiar andthey are less stressed by it. They do find cleanouts very stressful because they scent mark everything to make it theirs and to find their way around.

They are particularly fussy about their nest and hoards and can develop abnormal behaviours if those are removed - like peeing on the hoard. Those can be left if they aren't pee'd in - for quite a long time. if you do have to remove any hoard or nest because it's pee'd in, always try and leave a little bit of old nest and dry hoard behind and add new food in exactly the same place. And put a pile of torn up strips of plain white toilet paper in the cage so she can rebuild her nest.
