Exclamation Syrain Hamster Babies

Two weeks ago I bought my first pet hamster in 10 years and the next day she had babies. I did my research and contacted the pet store and have been doing my best to take care of them. Leaving them alone and making sure water and food are accessible. The babies are now two weeks old and from what I can tell are doing great. My main concern is that when I got the hamster I was still in the process of putting together her actual cage, so, for the time being, I had put her in a smaller cage. The cage is really small (she still has room to walk around) but I figured at the time since it was only gonna be her home for about a day it would be fine. Now two weeks later she and her babies are all in this tiny cage. I don't want to cause her any unnecessary stress but since the babies are getting bigger I feel like the cage might be getting crowded and causing her stress anyways. Does anyone know if it would be okay to move them all over now to the bigger cage? If so how should I go about it? Thank you for the help!

My personal opinion:

Just leave them alone (only providing them with fresh food and water with minimal disturbance) until the babies have weaned at about 3 or 4 weeks old. Frail babies may need another week on top of that. After that, the babies should be separated from the mother. A move might cause the mother to eat her babies, so I'd suggest separation after they are weaned.

Of course, I may be quite wrong as I am inexperienced too, so hopefully more people can give better opinions.

Could you put the base of the small cage inside the big cage so the nest stays intact and the hamsters can move themselves? Then leave them be for a couple of days to settle in aside from supplying food and water of course.

I don't know about hamster babies but have read that people can gradually start handling them from two weeks onwards.

Hopefully one of the members in the know will respond soon. You could also phone a breeder or hamstery and ask for advice.

That's a really good tip and I actually tried it myself when helping my hamster to transition from a small cage to a big one. Silly me, why didn't I think of this. Yes, Ria has an excellent suggestion here that you should totally try, if viable.

For me, I placed my entire small cage inside a big one and kept the door to the small cage open, so that my hamster can explore at its own pace. You can leave the small cage in there for the next two weeks or so. If done correctly, your hamsters won't feel stressed at all. You are so wise, Ria!

I love this idea! I wish this would work but unfortunately, they are all in a glass tank with a wire top currently so I don't think it would be possible.

I automatically thought of a wire cage when you said small.
How big or small is the current cage then?
Didn't know one could get small tanks for hamsters.
