Default Syrian hamster compatibility

Dear community members,
I would value your advice. We have mated two adult hamsters, one 8 months old (the female) the other 3 months old (male) and no pregnancies Mating appears successful each time. They have been together at least four times, on different cycles, for 20 min periods of apparent mating. I am wondering what is going on 1) is the female grooming the sperm from herself perhaps? I have seen her groom afterwards. 2) they are very different looking hamsters. Might they be incompatible in some way? She is from show stock, he is not. 3) maybe this is just bad luck and one of them is infertile? Or perhaps her much bigger size is stopping him from managing it? I will attach photos.

Any advice gladly received!
Thank you.

It is normal for them to clean themselves after mating and is would not have any adverse affects. It's difficult to tell however your female is quite old for a first litter. 8 months would be about the limit we would breed at and really only for a second litter. Your male is also very young and may not be mature enough of large enough to successfully breed. With such a young male you have also not had a chance to see how he develops and if he has any issues that would make him unsuitable. I would try and source another male but you would need to do this soon because her age really is against her. Both should be in peak condition and ideally have pedigrees. There are certain combinations that you should have researched for compatability as well eg pattern to pattern is a no. Satin to satin also and you need to be careful with roan / white belly gene.
