In need of a gender confirmation!
Hi guys,
I just need a trained eye to confirm what I suspect, if you please.
I adopted two winter whites March 17th.
They are now separated(as of yesterday) because I'm almost 100% certain I have a male and a female. Both of them bring toilet paper shreddings into their bed, so I can't really tell if this is a "maternity nest". I'd love to be able to tell if the female is pregnant, but there have been no obvious signs to me(based on what I've read so far, that seems to just be natural behavior).
My initial hesitation on the gender was because the one that I NOW suspect is female is just SO BIG compared to the male. I now know that that doesn't really determine gender. But still!
Naturally, I am not up all night but when they were together there has been no humping or obvious signs of ham love -- fingers crossed anyway. These are my first hammy pets and i'd be so grateful to not have another ..8. If there is a way to tell she is pregnant now, I'm all ears
Attachments:
Ham 1 is Walter, Male.
Ham 2 once Rupert, now Ruby-Sue is female.
Yes no?
Many thanks in advance,
Melissa

Re: In need of a gender confirmation!
I can't tell from the photos, but someone with more experience in dwarf hamsters may be able to.
What I can say though is, whether they are both male or one is male and one is female, you have done right to separate them. Rupert/Ruby may be getting big for a couple of reasons. Yes it could be pregnancy (if she is female), but the other reason may be that when dwarf hamsters live in pairs, one of the pair can become dominant and may be getting most of the food. Which is a kind of bullying that can lead to fighting.
What you describe about the nest may be just normal nesting - but I think you maybe have an instinct about this.
Glad they are now separated - and you now need to be on pregnancy watch. You can't tell when she's had the babies but it's important not to disturb her in the run up to her giving birth, or afterwards. So it's a case of just putting food and water out - lots of extra protein food as well, leaving her alone and seeing if babies start squeaking or emerging from the nest - which could be another 3 weeks or so.
So no poking in the nest to see if there are any babies -if her nest or cage is disturbed, she will cull the babies.
She may not look less big after giving birth, for some time, so you won't know if she's had them possibly, until you either hear them make odd little noises, or when they are big enough to start coming out of the nest.
Of course if in 3 weeks time there is no sign she may not be pregnant.

Re: In need of a gender confirmation!
Initially from the photos that both your Russians are males - but the more I look at the second photo I not 100% as leaning more toward female- I find it easier to tell in person. If they turn out to be the same gender The likely hood is that both your WW may be hybrids so have Campbell’s mixed in some were in their lineage this can cause their sizes to vary vastly from one another. Otherwise if they are different genders you will need to put the female on maternity watch.
I would wait for further confirmation from others. Although they will be much happier on their own

Re: In need of a gender confirmation!
It isn’t as clear but I’m also thinking female for Ruby-sue, and yes Walter male. Hopefully there won’t be any babies but just have to wait and see really.

Re: In need of a gender confirmation!
The reason why I am hesitating is Walter has the "belly button" peen and there seems to be more of a separation and Ruby/Rupert does not have both these things. The spacing seems much closer on ham 2.
Separating was best I guess. Not worth the risk for a lot of reasons. I'll sleep better at night now lol.

I agree, it looks like Ruby’s most likely to be female. How old are they? It will be easier to tell as they mature as the males generally have quite large testes and more prominent scent gland

The pet shop told me that they were about a month at march 17th. But who knows, because the petshop employee looked young and inexperienced. The photos below the butt photos show pics of each of them.

Not sure this will help but pics of a young male and female Hybrid dwarf at 8
weeks.

Note the male pup was dampened down with water on my hands to show the openings a bit clearer.
