Default Mother's rough handling and loud squeaks from pups!

Hi, I've been posting so many posts lately and I still have more questions. I really appreciate everyone's comments and help so far!

My hamster's pups are now a week old. The mother had then in a little plastic house, so I haven't been able to see them, but they are beginning to come out. I left a little tiny bits of chopped zucchini, broccoli and small seed wet with water incase they wanted to start eating some solids outside the nest.

They are beginning to come out of their little house. But when Mum hamster sees them she roughly takes them back inside the house. They squeak very loudly and she looks like she's being rough and possibly hurting them. Is this regular behaviour? Is this a normal mum and pup way of handling?

I'm scared the more they begin to venture out, she might hurt them.

I've been careful not to go near the babies or her next myself (other than quietly leaving some food outside). The mother also seems pretty relaxed in every other way.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks!!

Yes it is normal for mum to carry them back by whatever she can grab first! They are usually fine and it is bad luck if one gets hurt but it is an instinct and a good mother will attempt to carry them back at first. This usually wears off in a few days as she cannot keep up with them! If they are comig out they will be getting hungry so keep providing the small seed and veggies. A little porridge or babyfood is enjoyed as well. The pups will become more vocal as well as they tussle and argue over food and also over the milk bar! Again this is to be expected and is a leaning experience for them yoo.

Thanks Souffle! I felt much more at ease after reading your response. Only 2 days later, they are now all venturing out to their little food dish and exactly what you said is happening! Mum is ok with them coming out now and they are squeaking more, arguing over tiny bits of broccili!

They are SUPER cute. But only 10 days. Even though they have fur now, I’m not going to touch them until 14 days! I want to be sure it’s safe!
Thank you!
